Alzheimer’s researchers have no shortage of questions. One of their problems is finding enough time — and enough eyes — to search for the answers.

That’s where thousands of citizen scientists come in.

Through Stall Catchers, volunteers help researchers examine microscopic images of tiny blood vessels in the brains of mice, looking for potentially important clues to Alzheimer’s disease.

For Ron Peterson, accessibility at the Tijuana Estuary is personal.

A longtime volunteer who lost his sight, Ron wanted people who are blind or have low vision to be able to experience the trails with greater independence.

Working with estuary staff and members of the blind community, he helped bring NaviLens wayfinding technology to the reserve.

It’s a story about accessibility — and what can happen when someone asks, “How can we make this better?”

What would your dream volunteer job look like?

For Evelyn Vance, it looks a lot like Birch Aquarium.

Her volunteer work gives her a chance to spend time in a place she loves, learn about marine life and share that enthusiasm with visitors.

Arthur Soriano spent 23 years of his life involved in the criminal justice system and incarceration. For years, his identity was connected to gangs, prison, violence and survival.

Today, that past helps him reach young people who may be headed down some of the same roads.

In our September “Why I Started a Nonprofit” column, Soriano shares the journey that led him to found Youth Empowerment.

Could playing a game help advance Alzheimer’s research?

That’s the idea behind Stall Catchers.

Players watch short videos showing blood moving through tiny vessels in the brains of mice and help researchers identify places where blood flow has stalled.

No science background required — just a computer or mobile device and a willingness to help.

Imagine arriving at a nature trail and being able to find your way, learn about the plants around you and explore more independently — without being able to see.

At the Tijuana Estuary, new technology is helping make that possible.

The project began with Ron Peterson, a blind volunteer and retired engineer who believed the estuary could do more to make nature accessible.

The September issue of Kindness Happens Here is here!

This month, we meet people who are using their experiences, skills and curiosity to make a difference.

Come with us to the Tijuana Estuary, meet citizen scientists helping Alzheimer’s researchers, hear from a former gang member who found a new purpose helping young people and meet a volunteer who found her dream role at Birch Aquarium.

🌲 The world becomes richer when we learn to notice.

Our August cover story is an invitation to slow down and pay closer attention—to nature, to neighbors and to ourselves.
