How can we know another man's heart or true desire? We're not even sure about our own. So many potent suggestions have been made to us that we question our own hearts. If we can understand who we are, we will know others. To identify something valuable in another person is to know it in ourselves. The Tsalagi calls it intuitive or perceptive - to know something without tangible evidence. The miracle is in finding something good in someone else and realizing we have to have it in us to be able to recognize it. One who never has a good word or a good thought for anyone reveals his terrible need. ~ Sentiment was against the Indian, that they could not be civilized....could not be educated....were somewhat like human beings....but not quite in line of human rights.... ~

Most anything has some distortion. Living today is a little like standing in front of a trick mirror that stretches the legs to the size of sticks and puts kneed where ankles should be. What is real? Even nature affords some illusion. Arid desert has mirages of water standing in pools. It looks real, but approach it and it disappears. We must be aware of illusion - of distortion, because some businesses practice it. When our own eyes squint against truth we are creating distortion. If we can't trust ourselves to recognize the truth, who can we trust? ~ I could cheerfully hope that those of another age and generation may not feel the effects of those oppressive measures. ~

If everyone were alike, what a dull world this would be. It is the individuality of each person that makes the world so interesting. The tremendous differences in people give a wide range of personalities, beliefs, and appearances to every group, no matter how small. If all the flowers in the world were of one color, would we think them so beautiful? It is the variety and wide range of rainbow colors that keeps us fascinated. Cowper wrote, "Variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavor." So many have no thought of life except what they will eat, what they will wear, and how they can entertain themselves. And then we come on someone who has the ability to see loveliness in the sunlight and charm in the quiet rain. They can say things to encourage, or to make calm and peaceful. We meet many different kinds of people. Some we love and some we like and love, which is a terrific difference. It is to find a wholeness or a part of our lost self in someone else. It isn't that they are so much like us or that we believe the way they do, but that they communicate, and it is this rare communication that respects the differences between peoples.

A person totally dominated by his emotions is little different from a piece of paper lifted and tossed by the wind. Everything centers around caution - don't do this, don't say that - or an emotional explosion can take place. None of us escapes emotional extremes. We have cried our hearts out and laughed hilariously in all the wrong places. We have known melancholy and ragged nerves. But most of us know how to stabilize our feelings. The unstable times are when someone feels he has a right to blow. Without sadness or happiness we could be deadly indifferent, but to be blown about with every emotion is a waste of human spirit. ~ May the Lord bring you out of all your troubles. Trust your course with Him. ~

π—ͺπ—”π—œπ—§π—œπ—‘π—š, about 1909. The horse, in its winter coat, had some frost on its tail and body. Richard Throssel was best known for his photos taken while living on Montana’s Crow Reservation. Throssel, one-quarter Canadian Cree, was already a skilled photographer when Edward Curtis came to the Reservation during the winter of 1904-05. One Throssel photo, and perhaps more, appeared without credit in Curtis’s β€œThe North American Indian.”

Was the lone tepee Throssel’s? He would have been traveling with his bulky camera, tripod, and delicate glass-plate negatives. Throssel started photography about 25 years after Miles City’s L.A. Huffman, my favorite frontier photographer. During 1911, Throssel established a studio in Billings. By that time, Huffman was primarily marketing prints of his earlier, historically important captures. Text and a bit of Photoshop cleaning/sharpening by Gary Coffrin.
