In 1973, at the age of 6, Phyllis Webstad was sent to boarding school. Her grandmother bought her a brand new orange shirt to wear on her first day of Mission School, but when she arrived at Mission School, she was stripped and had her clothes taken away - including one orange shirt.
โ€œI don't understand why they don't give it back to me, it's mine! Orange always reminds me of that and that my feelings don't matter, no one cares and I feel like I have no value. All our children cried and no one cared.โ€ - Phyllis Webstad, Founder of the Orange Shirt Association.
On September 30, we wear orange to remember Phyllisโ€™ story and the 150,000 Indigenous children like her who were taken from their families, communities, and cultures.

Ute woman, Colorado, circa 1899.
This photo of a Ute woman, identified on the photo as Pee-a-rat, and her baby in a cradleboard, was part of a series of Ute images taken by the Denver photography studio of Rose & Hopkins in about 1899.
John K. Rose (1849-1932), Benjamin Hopkins (1859-1915), and Lee Morehouse (1850-1926) of Rose & Hopkins, were photographers based in Denver who took photos of Native American Indians wearing traditional dress, including members of the Ute, Arapaho, Shoshone, Pueblo, and Apache tribes throughout Colorado and Wyoming. Portraits include Southern Ute Chief Sapiah (also known as Buckskin Charley), Sapiahโ€™s wife Towee, Weeminuche Ute Chief Ignacio, and Apache Chief James A. Garfield, and many others. Many of their studio portraits were taken at the Denver Festival of Mountain and Plain circa 1896-1899.
Although many of the sitters in the photos are identified, and some are well-known, for many, such as Pee-a-rat, we know nothing beyond their names.
One of our readers, Carole Graham, exercised a little lateral thinking, and might have come up with a bit more about Pee-a-rat and her child: "There's a Ute woman whose name is extremely close, A-cop-e-a-rat, (age 27) living on the Southern Ute Reservation, according to the 1902 Indian Census Rolls. She's been given the name "Anna Lyon Parker" and has a 1 year old baby daughter, Pu-o. Good chance this is the woman in the photo, especially if it was actually taken ca. 1901-1902.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEANU REEVES !!
Keanu Reeves, born on September 2, 1964, is a Canadian actor, producer, and musician known for his roles in action and sci-fi films like The Matrix and John Wick.
Actor, film director, film producer and musician Keanu Charles Reeves (Keanu Charles Reeves),
Missed the first 20 minutes of the party dedicated to the end of filming of his new movie at one of the clubs in New York.
He waited patiently in the rain to be let in.
No one recognized him.

The club owner said: โ€œI didn't even know Keanu was standing in the rain waiting to get in - he didn't say anything to anyone.โ€
"He travels by public transport."
"He easily communicates with homeless people on the streets and helps them."
- He was only 60 years old (September 2, 1964)
- He can only eat hot dogs in the park, sitting among normal people.
- After filming one of the "Matrix", he gave all the stuntmen a new motorcycle - in recognition of their skills.
- He gave up most of the salaries of the costume designers and computer scientists who drew the special effects on "The Matrix" - deciding that their share of the film's budget was assessed short.
- He reduced his salary for the movie "The Devil's Advocate" to have enough money to invite Al Pacino.
- Almost at the same time his best friend passed away; His girlfriend lost a child and soon died in a car accident, and his sister suffered from leukemia.
Keanu didn't fail: he donated $5 million to the clinic that treated his sister, refused to be filmed (to be with her), and founded the Leukemia Foundation, donating significant amounts from each fee for the movie.

๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ก๐—š ๐—ข๐—ง๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ (also known as Six Pool), was a revered Medicine Man and War Leader of the Crow people. This rare 1905 photograph captures him adorned in a striking raptor headdress, symbolizing both spiritual power and martial prestige.

The Crow tribe, or Apsรกalooke (often spelled Absaroka), meaning โ€œchildren of the long-beaked bird,โ€ are from the eastern Montana region. Their people held a deep relationship with the natural world, and headdresses like the one worn by Long Otter were not merely decorativeโ€”they carried profound ceremonial and spiritual significance, connecting the wearer to the strength, vision, and swiftness of birds of prey.

Long Otter embodied the dual roles central to many respected leaders of his time: that of the healer and the protector. As a Medicine Man, he guided his people through ceremonies, healing practices, and sacred knowledge; as a War Leader, he defended the tribeโ€™s homelands and ensured the survival of the Crow against external threats.

This portrait preserves more than just his likenessโ€”it represents a living testament to the resilience, dignity, and enduring traditions of the Crow Nation at the dawn of the 20th century.

In Navajo culture, laughter is seen as a powerful symbol of connection. The moment a baby laughs for the first time, it is believed they are choosing to join the human community. Until then, the baby is viewed as still being in transition between the spiritual and physical worlds.

This tradition, known as the Aโ€™wee Chiโ€™deedloh ceremony, is typically observed around three months of age. Family members pay close attention during this period, eager to be the one who makes the child laugh. Whoever succeeds earns the honor of hosting the celebration, often preparing a meal of salted food and gifts to mark the occasion.

The ceremony not only celebrates the babyโ€™s first expression of joy, but also emphasizes generosity and community. Salt is symbolically offered to guests to encourage the child to grow up to be generous and kind. Itโ€™s one of the earliest social teachings given to a Navajo childโ€”using joy as a path toward belonging and humanity. ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘ถ

โ€œHe didnโ€™t come to be seenโ€ฆ he came to rememberโ€ โ€” Willie Nelson sat alone at Toby Keithโ€™s grave and let his guitar do the talking. There were no headlines. There was no memorial concert. It was just Willie, his old Trigger guitar, and the Oklahoma breeze the day Toby Keith left this world a year ago. He played โ€œAngel Flying Too Close to the Groundโ€ โ€” not for the crowd, but for the friend who had stood next to him in the same spotlight. Witnesses said the music flowed through the silence like a โ€œprayerโ€ โ€” each note HEAVIER than the last. As the final chords settled, Willie whispered something into the tombstone, placed a wildflower at its base, and walked away โ€” a living legend remembering the only way he knew how: with quiet, aching grace.

Why Isnโ€™t This Map in the History Books?
Native Tribes of North America Mapped
The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in North America about 15 thousand years ago. As a result, a wide diversity of communities, societies, and cultures finally developed on the continent over the millennia.
NATIVE AMERICAN MAP : ๐Ÿ‘‡
(https://nativerites.com/native-american-map)
The population figure for Indigenous peoples in the Americas before the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was 70 million or more.
About 562 tribes inhabited the contiguous U.S. territory. Ten largest North American Indian tribes: Arikara, Cherokee, Iroquois, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, Eskimo, Comanche, Choctaw, Cree, Ojibwa, Mohawk, Cheyenne, Navajo, Seminole, Hope, Shoshone, Mohican, Shawnee, Miโ€™kmaq, Paiute, Wampanoag, Ho-Chunk, Chumash, Haida.
Below is the tribal map of Pre-European North America.
The old map below gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes in full flower ~ the โ€œGlory Days.โ€ It is pre-contact from across the eastern sea or, at least, before that contact seriously affected change. Stretching over 400 years, the time of contact was quite different from tribe to tribe. For instance, the โ€œGlory Daysโ€ of the Maya and Aztec came to an end very long before the interior tribes of other areas, with some still resisting almost until the 20th Century.
At one time, numbering in the millions, the native peoples spoke close to 4,000 languages.
The Americasโ€™ European conquest, which began in 1492, ended in a sharp drop in the Native American population through epidemics, hostilities, ethnic cleansing, and slavery.
When the United States was founded, established Native American tribes were viewed as semi-independent nations, as they commonly lived in communities separate from white immigrants.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ The Story of Rain in the Face

Rain-in-the-Face, a renowned Sioux warrior whose very name once inspired fear across the western frontier, lived a life marked by war, resistance, and survival in a rapidly changing world. His Lakota name, Ito-na-gaju, meaning โ€œRain-in-the-Face,โ€ came from an early fight in which his opponentโ€™s blood splattered across his cheeks, creating a striking image that stayed with him for life.

He was a war chief of the Hunkpapa Sioux within the Lakota Nation and gained fame as one of the warriors who fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Oral history suggests he may have played a role in the death of General George Armstrong Custer, though accounts differ, and he himself denied it in later years. Regardless, his courage and presence on that battlefield became part of the enduring legend of that fateful day when Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors defeated Custerโ€™s 7th Cavalry.

Despite being feared by settlers and soldiers alike, Rain-in-the-Face was remembered by his people not just as a warrior, but also as a man of dignity and resilience. He endured imprisonment, constant conflict, and the harsh realities of reservation life after the wars.

On September 14, 1905, Rain-in-the-Face died at his home on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. His passing marked the end of an era, yet his story continues to live on as a testament to the Lakota spirit of resistance and survival.

Turquoise and it's meaning to Native Americans-Legend has it that the Native American Indians danced and rejoiced when the rains came. Their tears of joy mixed with the rain and seeped into Mother Earth to become SkyStone Turquoise.
Turquoise, the "fallen sky stone" hidden in Mother Earth, has been valued by cultures for its beauty and reputed spiritual and life-giving qualities for over 7000 years. It is a true gem of the centuries. A long time ago someone noticed a clear blue line running through gray rock, and saw the imagery of sky and water in stone, and from that time on, turquoise has been cherished above all else in creation - turquoise, stone of sky, stone of water, stone of blessings, good fortune, protection, good health and long life.
Elsewhere, turquoise may come and go with fashion. Here turquoise is more precious than gold, an enduring expression of Native American Indian culture. It is the birthstone of December and signifies success.
There is a wonderful fascination to turquoise, a feeling that takes hold of a person who comes in contact with it for a while. The fascination has been the same down through the centuries and it has been prized for thousands of years through many countries of the world.
Native American Indians had as many different words for turquoise as there were languages spoken. Many of the words translated into English as the sky stone evoking the sky-blue shade of the stone most commonly found. Native Americans had been working turquoise mines with stone mauls and antler picks for centuries before the arrival of the Europeans.
Native Americans believe that the earth is alive and that all things, no matter how small or apparently inanimate, are precious. To the Native Americans, turquoise is life. There are stones medicine men keep in their sacred bundles because they possess powers of healing. Stones and crystals have unique attributed that support and heal us.
Turquoise, especially, is known for its positive healing energy, an aid in mental functions, communications and expression and as a protector. If youโ€™re wearing a turquoise ring and you look down and see a crack in your stone, the Native Americans would say โ€œthe stone took itโ€, meaning the stone took the blow that you would have received.
Turquoise over diamonds any day. ๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’™
