Samsung Wins Cool Points With Personalized Dragon Phone

A nice story for sure. But what caught our attention was the following sentence in the letter Samsung sent along w/ the product:
"As a token of our appreciation for the positive media you helped us attain"
Odd to hear a brand saying it straight out like that. Or perhaps a sneaky way to encourage more people to do this kind of legwork?

After a fan sent a picture of a dragon to Samsung to try and get a free phone, the company sent him a personalized dragon Galaxy S III.

5 Steps To Handling Your Next Brand Crisis

Solid, sober advice. We often see fans very purposefully airing their complaints about brands, and how/when to acknowledge is perhaps an article for another time. But this article is a great reference point indeed.

The past couple of years have seen numerous brands get into trouble and then have to find their way back to winning the hearts and minds of their customers, stakeholders, and society at large. Chick-fil-A is only the most recent one in hot water. Before that we had the Komen Race for the Cure Cancer...

Did Chick-fil-A Pretend to Be a Teenage Girl on Facebook?

So Chic-Fil-A (in addition to its crimes against Good Grammar) takes a widely-despised position on gay marriage. Then the Muppets get involved, with signs going up explaining why the Muppet toys were pulled. Citing "philosophical differences" would have made that part of it a non-story; instead they tried to claim the toys were unsafe and THEN the story gets weird. Big blunder if the shenanigans in the article below turn out to be true. Hey Chicken Fillet, next time try a little transparency.

Chick-fil-A, home of chicken-loving bigots, is in the middle of a PR nightmare. After Chick-fil-A's COO admitted to being anti-gay, the Jim Henson Company (bless their heart) pulled their toys from Chick-fil-A's kids meals.

More Americans Are Using Mobile Phones While Watching TV

We all do it. Remote in one hand, smartphone in the other. Are we still waiting for the clean convergence of web and TV or do we even actually want this? (or is this question even relevant to the article/conversation below?) In any event. Most modern smartypants types rarely put down their smartypants phone.

Thanks to the growth of smartphone adoption, about half of the U.S. mobile phone owners use their devices while watching TV, a new study suggests.

Finally took a look at this infographic that's been making the rounds. And while we get where they're coming from (and are no strangers to wild generalizations), it seems a tad off. Most of the lefty-exclusive assumptions seem right (see that?), but most of the righty-exclusive assumptions seem ... off. With a few exceptions (Bing comes to mind) it feels like the left uses the lot, and that a few are, in fact, left-leaning (as featured in the 'graphic).

Orbitz Shows Mac Users Pricier Hotel Options: Big Deal Or No Brainer? : NPR

Annoying enough to get us off of Orbitz. Would consider it not a huge deal but dumb.

The Mac user is both willing to spend on design and appreciative of a web / mobile service that delivers value.

It rankles more than enrages but won't use again.

The travel site noticed that Mac users seem more likely to spend more on hotel rooms. So, it's experimenting with showing them costlier options than Windows users see. Is that smart business or unfair in some way?

IS STEALING MUSIC REALLY THE PROBLEM?

Best line from Jay Frank dissection of David Lowery argument:

'When told by a co-worker that David is the founder of Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, he replies, “Not sure what either of those are…”'

http://www.futurehitdna.com/is-stealing-music-really-the-problem/

Once again, the issue of stealing music and its moral/financial/ethical arguments are dredged up. And once again, most people miss the overall point, causing the collective issue to dig a deeper ditch while those who’ve moved past it (i.e.: major labels) are busy raking in the dough in the new music...

Surprise surprise - Bob Lefsetz has a take on the whole David Lowery / Emily NPR back 'n' forth.
Pull quote: "While we’re at it, why don’t we save the printers’ jobs too. And bring back Smith-Corona. That company had employees…"

If only he’d make music as riveting as his writing, with as many people caring about what he has to sing. Then again, Lowery is preaching to the converted, wannabe artists who are pissed the gravy train broke down before they could get their fair share.

Letter to Emily White at NPR All Songs Considered.

What happens when you're a newly-minted 20-year-old summer intern at NPR and you let it slip that although you have over 11,000 songs in you music library you have "only bought 15 CDs" in your lifetime?
To begin with you get this rather lengthy reply from David Lowery (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker). This story is making the rounds, and raises interesting points about the music business, Spotify, and the truth about where musicians make their money (if any).

Recently Emily White, an intern at NPR All Songs Considered and GM of what appears to be her college radio station, wrote a post on the NPR blog in which she acknowledged that while she had 11,000 ...

Why traditional media should be afraid of Twitter

Say there's a rumor about your favorite baseball squadron trading your favorite player. Where do you go to see if there's any truth to it? ESPN? The gossip fence? Google? Nope - you go to twitter.
Pull quote:
"Twitter is curating information, just as media companies do."

Twitter's hiring of editorial staff to curate real-time information around news events through "hashtag pages" may not be a direct competitor for media companies, but the areas of overlap are growing -- and so is its attractiveness to the advertisers that media entities desperately need.

Unlike Facebook, Twitter’s mobile revenue rivals the desktop

Interesting read. That is if you think topic like "the monetization of mobile" could remotely be considered interesting.
As one commenter points out, studies show that twitter is accessed more than Facebook via mobile. Maybe there's a quality/quantity angle though; perhaps the engagement is deeper (more valuable?) with Facebook mobile vs twitter.

It seems that Twitter has done an exceptional job when it comes to monetizing its mobile audience. Not only that, but Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said the startup often generates more revenue from mobile usage than desktop, according Reuters.

UNDO DEL IUMA « ASCII by Jason Scott

IUMA rebirth. Great news for a Friday. If you haven't heard of Internet Underground Music Archive it's one of the originals and well worth a quick read about how music distribution was democratized.

UNDO DEL IUMA — May 21, 2012 The best projects cause a lot of people to shrug or go “oh, that’s nice” and then a much smaller percentage of people to drop whatever they’re carrying and stagger forward in disbelief. Here’s one of those. For some people, just bringing up the phrase “The Interne...

Siri: 'Steve Jobs Would Have Been Embarrassed,' Says Former Apple Employee

Not sure how Apple botched this but they did. They never advertised the iPhone as having amazing reception when it only was on ATT (which was smart). Why promote a feature that the engineers must know is not ready for this kind of attention.

I hate the Jobs reference in this piece but someone very very strong that is connecting the dots between product and marketing would not have made this mistake.

Things have gotten so bad for the iPhone 4S's digital assistant Siri, one former Apple employee says Steve Jobs would have been embarrassed by it.
