Did you know about the big hole in Butte, Montana?
The Berkeley Pit is the remnants of an old abandoned pit mine which was formerly a mountain full of copper, gold, aluminum, arsenic and other metals. Parts of the city were eaten up as the mountain was destroyed to create a 1,000 foot deep pit. Entire neighborhoods were forced to relocate or destroyed entirely in the pursuit of profit. After it was abandoned, the pit filled with ground water which became toxic and unsafe until it was designated a Superfund site in 1987. Although the water is still toxic, it has become a tourist attraction and you can visit this site in Butte, MT for only $6 per person!
