Remedy Quarterly Stories of food, Recipes for feeling good.
Independent Food Magazine

Remedy Quarterly is an independent food magazine based in Brooklyn, New York. Each issue has a theme and contains a collection of food memories and the recipes that inspire them.

Mission: We believe that food is something that brings people together. Every one has a story to tell, and more often than not, food is involved. Remedy Quarterly gives people, whether professional food writers or top-notch grandmas, a place to share their stories and recipes, much like the community cookbooks that inspired us.

After an extended break from publishing, I have decided to officially stop publishing Remedy Quarterly.

I want to take a moment to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of our readers, supporters, contributors, and stockists. You have brought me so much joy and helped me grow in ways I never expected.

Remedy Quarterly has always been a passion project for me—each issue gave me an opportunity to connect with a community that understood the power, comfort, and connection that both good food and wonderful writing can bring us. But life changes and forces us to reevaluate. It was a difficult decision to let it go, one that I didn’t handle in the most elegant manner, and for that I am sorry. But please know that I will take all of the amazing lessons I’ve learned, along with a wonderful collection of recipes, as I move on to my next adventure.

As I officially say good bye to Remedy Quarterly, I want to say thank you for your support. I will be addressing all outstanding orders and questions in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me, [email protected].

Submissions are open for our first ever double issue! We'd love to hear your stories about work + play (and food of course!).

All story submissions are due by Friday, February 26.

Issue 21 is our first ever double issue! Since we’ve got more space, we’re going to have two themes: work + play. We’re looking for a wide range of ideas for both themes (they will be separated within the issue, i.e. there will be a work section and

Saving The Sweetest Watermelon The South Has Ever Known

Just like treasured recipes are handed down from generation to generation, this family passed down treasured watermelon seeds and ended up saving the sweetest watermelon in the south. I love stories like this.

http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/05/19/407949182/saving-the-sweetest-watermelon-the-south-has-ever-known

The Bradford boasted sweet flesh so coveted, 19th-century growers turned to guns and poison to thwart thieves. The melon all but vanished by the 1920s. Now a descendant of its creator is reviving it.

A Mother’s Cookbook Shares More Than Recipes

I absolutely love this piece about messy recipe cards and splattered pages in cookbooks. So many of the thoughts shared are what inspire the stories in Remedy Quarterly.

“I tell my daughters that when I go, they’ll know the good recipes from the dirty pages.”

A family’s cooking history is seasoned with smudges, shorthand notations and challenging penmanship.

One of the many things I love about creating a new issue is working with so many talented writers and artists. In Issue 17: Taste, photographer Steve Czerniak shares some of his favorite tropical fruits found in his Hawaiian backyard and beyond.

Absolutely love this piece about making lefse, a Norwegian flatbread, in Minnesota. I did the same thing with my grandma-in-law just a few years ago.

It's a great example of how food connects people. Is there a recipe in your family that everyone makes together?

Sam Sifton travels to lefse country to make this Norwegian flatbread, which has been served on Thanksgiving tables in North Dakota and MInnesota since the 19th century: http://nyti.ms/11Hj4Zq
