We returned to San Diego this weekend to finalize the documentary film of CAPT. Florence Choe. Kristin and Jay enjoyed a morning of surfing with the crew at Dana Point. Then we interviewed Jay’s mom, Mrs. Choe, who invited us to her home for the second time to talk about her family and the impact of the Afghanistan War.

This year we are making six films about women killed in action in Afghanistan. To be sure, all service personnel lives are equally valuable. In this Facebook post, we want to shine light on two of the thirteen service members killed in action during the su***de attack in Kabul, Afghanistan: U.S. Marines Sgt. Johanny Rosario (25) and Sgt. Nicole Gee (23). We list these two brave Americans to show the heroic and at times tragic service women have made to America's efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

These warriors represent the best of us. We morn this loss and the great pain shared by their families and battle buddies.

We resume our cemetery profile release of this year with Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Located in El Paso, Texas and operated by Victor Vasquez, Fort Bliss National Cemetery is an eclectic cemetery reflecting the history of El Paso. The fort was first established in the late 1840s at the end of the Mexican-American war. The construction aggregate of the location comes from the mountains surrounding the cemetery. The crushed granite replicates the color of the beautiful mountains, distinguishing it from other cemetery landscapes. The second film we worked on this week centers on Capt. Jennifer Moreno. Capt. Moreno, assigned to an Army Special Operations Command cultural support team, was killed along with two Army Rangers and an Army criminal investigator by a roadside bomb blast in Zhari, Afghanistan, in 2013. Moreno graduated from San Diego High School, where she was a leader on the JROTC team. She went on to graduate from the University of San Francisco, where she earned a nursing degree. She earned her jump wings in the U.S. Army, a rare achievement for an Army nurse. We interviewed Tim Hughey, a retired Chief Warrant Officer, Vietnam War veteran (two tours), and JRTOC instructor. Chief Hughey was Jennifer's mentor and had the honor, some four years after she graduated high school, of pinning on her officer bars and rendering a solute. Daniel Bernardi is directing. Diana Sánchez is producing. Andrés Gallegos is DP. Jesse Sutterley is second camera and post-production supervisor. Special thanks to Chief Hughey and Karin Brennan for their considerable support.

If you want to learn more about Capt. Moreno, you can start here and then follow us on Facebook as we will keep you updated on the progress of this and other films we're making this year.

This past few days we started shooting two documentaries. In this post, meet CAPT Jay Choe, USN. A medical doctor, CAPT Choe is a Gold Star husband. He lost his first wife, Lt. Florence Choe, in a 2009 Green-on-Blue assault in Afghanistan. An Afghan soldier we were working with turned his gun on Lt. Florence Choe, killing her, another Sailor and wounding a third. That left CAPT Choe a single parent of a four-year old daughter... and his daughter without her mom. After a challenging period, CAPT Choe remarried. He and his wife now have three daughters. All five are doing well thanks to the love of many. We're telling their story with incredible support from CAPT Choe, the US Navy, and many others.

If you'd like to learn more about Lt. Florence Choe, an amazing human being and Sailor, you can start here: https://thefallen.militarytimes.com/navy-lt-florence-b-choe/4013489

Opportunity for Veterans! New Musicals Inc (NMI) is adapting veteran's stories into ten-minute musicals to be filmed as part of a web-series to honor veterans. Veterans whose stories are selected for development will receive a $1000 honorarium and hold on to the rights of their stories. Don't let the "musical" aspect dissuade you. NMI just needs a compelling story from your military background – just one story – not a compilation -- and they will bring a composer, lyricist, and professional actor together to turn it into song. They will also welcome you into the collaboration process if you want to be included on the creative side. See the link for info and a very short video that explains the project. Deadline is November 20. www.nmi.org/veterans
