As the movement to push back on campus sexual assault grows, we need to identify populations most vulnerable to assault and to provide them with the structural supports and resources they need.

The Media Consortium is saddened to see the closure of New America Media. At a time when former pillars of local news are cracking, ethnic news remains the strongest and most vibrant local media sector.

We look forward to working with ethnic media outlets to build a national media movement that fosters equitable reporting, supporting the information needs of all communities.

Rebel Cities
Cities as laboratories for democratic transformation

Since the New Deal, social justice advocates often have focused on making change at the federal level. Increasingly, however, the most radical experiments in participatory democracy and transformative economies are happening in cities.

The power of municipalities in the age of Trump has been in the news recently with the sanctuary cities movement and the Paris Climate Accords backlash. These are two manifestations of many ongoing efforts to leverage the potential economic and political power of the city. This briefing will focus on ongoing programs in Jackson, Mississippi and Madison, Wisconsin to transform local economies in order to create economic democracy and community ownership.

Kali Akuno (Co-Founder & Co-Director, Cooperation Jackson)
Kali Akuno is a co-founder and co-director of Cooperation Jackson. Kali served as the Director of Special Projects and External Funding in the Mayoral Administration of the late Chokwe Lumumba of Jackson, MS. Kali also served as the Co-Director of the US Human Rights Network, the Executive Director of the Peoples' Hurricane Relief Fund (PHRF) based in New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.
Read more about the movement in Jackson here.

Rebecca Kemble (Alderman for Madison, Wisconsin District 18)
Rebecca Kemble is the past President of the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives and the President of CICOPA North America, the sub-regional body of the worker cooperative sector of the International Cooperative Alliance. In 2015 Rebecca was elected to the Madison Common Council and was re-elected in 2017.

This briefing is open to all reporters. As part of the briefing we will also talk about the difficulty of reporting on radical economic transitions. Questions? [email protected]

This is the 3rd briefing call for the New Economies Reporting Project. Any reporter interested in "rebel cities" may join this call. For more information, contact [email protected]

In Search of Equity: the Media Consortium Reinvents Itself

"The big drivers of national political life—immigration, education, health care—all begin with local stories. To best tell the story of our times we need to be able to tell these stories where they start."

The Media Consortium was founded in 2006 to create a collaborative network of self-sustaining independent progressive journalism outlets. The good news is that this work has succeeded.

LABOR DAY and our #podcast episode on Solidarity Economy at http://ow.ly/lnch30ePcxt make us fantasize: What would happen if all the #Houston and gulf coast flood victims could rebuild with housing cooperatives and worker-owned businesses,

and gulf prison activists groups would fund their work via a collective bakery, and all the politicians would truly represent people not profits and would run on Solidarity Economy Platforms, and collectives of queer poc would lead the way, with community artists coops creatively expressing peoples' liberation-in-action...

and the half of the US's fossil fuel industry which was located in the path of #Harvey would be shut down, and workers there would be supported and rehired by hundreds of cooperative businesses across the region...

Immigrants in Houston Face Triple Threat: Flooding, Racist Texas Law SB4 & Potentially Losing DACA

"We fear that undocumented people will just go into hiding and not want to come forward to report any damages or to help rebuild in the sense that they don’t know that they may be eligible for things, or they may fear that if they do seek help, then they’re going to be persecuted."

As the fallout from Hurricane Harvey continues, a potential public safety crisis has emerged affecting Houston’s nearly 600,000 undocumented immigrants.

"For us sanctuary really looks like having a space that is safe for LGBT people, it goes far beyond changing immigration laws. It has to do with making sure that not only immigrants and LGBT people are protected, but that we’re also talking about the state violence that our black and brown brothers who are citizens also suffer. It’s also talking about economic justice"

What Is Independent Media?

"The influence of money in the media is more often expressed by defining the boundaries of a news outlet’s conception of what news is. It is the insidious, unspoken self-censorship that causes an editor to turn down a story not because it is bad or wrong but because it’s just not what we do here. Whether the root of this self-censorship is fear of losing advertisers, or fear of pissing off the boss, or fear of offending someone that you might run into at a party later this year, or just a deeply internalized and ill-understood sense of what is and is not respectable, the effect is the same. The New York Times, which answers to the most establishment of establishment families, and Breitbart, which answers to an unhinged right-wing hedge funder, draw their boxes of acceptability in different places, but they both have boxes."

Not so long ago, Nick Denton used to boast that Gawker Media was the last true beachhead of “independent media” in America. How quickly things change. Does “independent media” even mean anything, any more? Did it ever?
