Data shows seven California counties won by President Trump last year also supported Proposition 50, which redraws the state's congressional maps.

Ballots cast to approve Prop. 50 outnumbered "no" votes in Fresno, Imperial, Lake, Merced, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Joaquin counties, each of which were carried by Mr. Trump in the last presidential election.

Dana Williamson, Gov. Gavin Newsom's former chief of staff, was indicted on federal charges alleging she was involved in a scheme to steal campaign money from former federal Health Secretary Xavier Becerra.

The federal indictment lists four other co-conspirators. It alleges that Williamson, 53, developed a plan with Sean McCluskie, a longtime Becerra aide, to siphon money from one of Becerra's dormant state campaign accounts to give to McCluskie to pad his salary after he accepted a job as his chief of staff in Washington.

"Last Chance U" coach and Laney College athletic director John Beam died, one day after being shot on the Oakland, California campus, police announced.

Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell announced that Beam died Friday morning, just hours after confirming that an arrest had been made in connection with the shooting.

The Bay Area's newest Express Lanes will officially open soon, with tolls in effect daily, including weekends.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission announced that tolling on the new Express Lanes on Interstate 80 in Solano County will begin in December, with drivers being required to pay tolls every day of the week.

After one week on the job, recently appointed San Francisco supervisor Isabella "Beya" Alcaraz announced that she is resigning.

Alcaraz, a 29-year-old lifelong resident of the Sunset District and onetime owner of The Animal Connection pet store, with no prior political experience, has faced increased scrutiny following news reports about the store, which she sold earlier this year.

"I believe that my community deserves someone who will work 24/7 to advocate for us,” Alcaraz said in a statement. “And I understand that today's news stories would distract me from doing that. As a result, I told Mayor Lurie this evening that I will resign from my position as District 4 supervisor."
