Good pastors are a blessing — they shepherd faithfully, love the flock, and point people to Christ. But 3 John 9-11 warns us that not every man behind the pulpit has those motives.

The Apostle John called out such a pastor by name — Pastor Diotrephes. And what he did inside the church describes some pulpits today.

Are you ready for your wolf encounter? You need to be ready.

The church is an inestimable treasure.

In Christ’s churches we meet many godly, humble saints with whom we can walk together toward heaven.

Yet not every pastor walks in that same spirit.

The new book Pastor Diotrephes: A Study of Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing by Thomas Ross helps in discerning the righteous from those who may harm the flock—so believers can receive the one and wisely reject the other.

Let the Word of God be your only rule.

This was a core conviction of one of the most important Baptist voices of the 17th century, Benjamin Keach.

We’re excited to introduce his life and writings to a new generation of students and families through our Baptist Literary Heritage series. The first volume, Steadfast for Truth: An Introduction to the Life & Works of Benjamin Keach, is launching this June.

What verse or passage has been your “rule” lately in your home or classroom? We’d love to hear below. 👇

Baptist history is full of gifted writers — men and women who put their convictions into words with clarity, beauty, and courage.
We believe that tradition is alive.

A college student handed me a poem recently and asked for my thoughts on rhyme and meter. I gave them. But what struck me first was this — the convictions were already fully formed. The imagery was already there. She had looked at Calvary and found words for it.

“Hands with the pow’r to make atoms cohere,
Word of the Father who spoke forth each galaxy—
…Gasps with His final breath last words of victory."

Charity Harris is the first writer featured in our new Writer's Spotlight, a place at Virtue Paths where we celebrate Baptist voices of a new generation, growing in craft and conviction for the glory of God.

Baptists are not incidental figures standing at the edge of history.

For many years, my father—a Baptist pastor of nearly fifty years—has said, “We need a Baptist curriculum.” Those words stayed with me throughout my career teaching in Christian schools.

I noticed that the Baptist stories marked by conviction, conscience, and courage were usually missing altogether in standard Christian textbooks. If I wanted my students to see the beauty of the Baptist witness, I often had to go looking for those stories myself.

Story gives flesh to truth. It is one thing for a student to hear the words "liberty of conscience." It is another thing entirely for them to walk beside a family learning the cost of standing fast.

That is the burden behind Virtue Paths. We want to help homeschool families and Christian educators move Baptist history from an "appendix" to a central, shining example of faithfulness.

Whether it’s through the life of Benjamin Keach or the narratives in our Living History Library, our goal is to help you see the convictions that made Baptist history costly—and the faithfulness that made it shine. 🛡️📖

What helps truth take root in a student’s mind and conscience?

Teachers today have many useful tools available, and worksheets, quizzes, and tests all have their place. But alongside those tools, it is worth giving renewed attention to slower, more thoughtful habits of learning.

That kind of learning teaches students to listen carefully, narrate truthfully, and reflect deeply. Its goal is not merely to move through material, but to form judgment, conviction, and understanding.

This is one reason I have been working to shape a historical narrative curriculum supplement around a book that helps readers see how truth, conviction, and conscience take root through story.

In this article, I reflect on why recovering some of that older approach may matter more than we realize.

Recovering an Older Way of Learning

Christian education through narration, reflection, and story: forming mind, conscience, and conviction through truth.
