Alvarado: Rush to change to strong mayor system is a push by special interests - San José Spotlight

San Jose’ Mayor Sam Liccardo, “With little or no credible community process to discuss the merits and the minuses of such a change, we would be guilty of voter suppression, like President Donald Trump.”

https://sanjosespotlight.com/alvarado-rush-to-change-to-strong-mayor-system-is-a-push-by-special-interests/

The rush to change the City Charter to a strong mayor form of government is a rush that is driven not as much by need but by political expediency by special interests. The voters, if the measure goes to the November ballot, will be asked to lengthen the term of the current mayoral office holder,...

White Chef Who Cooks Vietnamese Food Accused of Harassing, Insulting Asian Americans

“It’s not a question of whether you can cook this food, whether you’re allowed to,” Vu says. “It’s about whether you gave it the kind of respect you would give to French food or Italian food. I’m a Vietnamese immigrant who learned how to spell soppressata. You can learn how to spell bánh mì.”

It all started with a typo. Peja Krstic, chef-owner of acclaimed Dallas Vietnamese restaurant Mot Hai Ba, reversed the h and n in “bánh mì” while writing a caption on Instagram June 16. He says autocorrect is to blame. But then three Vietnamese American women replied to correct the typo...

And now this...

A real incident at Laney College in Oakland, CA, where a Professor Matthew Hubbard demanded of a Vietnamese student named Phuc Bui that she change her name because he found it personally offensive.

On the one hand, the professor is an idiot, and many Vietnamese people in the United States know the pain of being mocked because of their names. On the other hand, I'm heartened by how much outrage this incident has generated on behalf of this student.

If names like Trump and Schwarzenneger and Obama and Kissinger have become American names, then all our Vietnamese names--including Phuc Bui--can be American names, too.

I had some things to say about my name and all our names in this New York Times essay.

Hello friends, here's an article on HuffPost yesterday for World Refugee Day in which my refugee story was featured along with two other families. Hope you'll enjoy reading it.
Hello, fellow Vietnamese, I came to America in 1975 as a teenager and recently published a memoir on my refugee experience, originally written 25 years ago, as a gift to my children so they would know about their heritage and history, but it never got published until April of this year. A few reasons for the delayed publication are my desire to raise awareness to what it means to be a refugee, an expression of solidarity with the new wave of Syrian refugees, and most recently, a message against the immigration or travel bans. I hope to share my memoir with you and your readers, "TigerFish, a Memoir of a South Vietnamese Colonel's Daughter and Her Coming of Age." It's currently on Amazon Giveaway if anyone is interested, I can give you the link. Thanks and I found the Podcast Episode 2 very informative!
