Overture Literary Magazine

Overture Literary Magazine Welcome to Overture Literary Magazine (www.overtureliterarymagazine.com), a multi-branch program to expand writing and art within the Bay Area community by publishing student work in a monthly, internationally-viewed magazine.

In musical terms, an overture is an orchestral composition forming the prelude or introduction to a musical piece. Much like an overture in music, this creative writing program will serve as an introduction to the landscapes of creativity, self-expression, and imagination.

Mission: Overture strives to inspire imagination, foster literary and artistic talent, and promote creative growth by teaching middle school students how to develop their own creative writing or art styles through mediums not offered at their own schools.

Winter 2016 Issue released!
Be sure to check out pieces by our members in "Mountains and Molehills," featuring a beautiful cover photo by Pratap Pereira. This issue is sure to impress with our writers' and artists' individual takes on a classic idiom that represents taking a minor issue and drastically inflating it.

Cover Photography for Cadenza, June 2012 by Jack Takahashi;http://overtureliterarymagazine.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/june-2012-cadenza1.pdf

Biography: Jack Takahashi is a Senior at Lynbrook High School. His interests include research and medicine, photography and film, ballroom dancing, male fashion, and music. He enjoys traveling around the world to bring home unique and culturally significant photographs. His photography gear constitutes a lot of his most prized possessions and he plans to make photography a lifelong hobby. He also hopes to one day become fluent in French and German. His favorite books are L'Étranger, To Kill a Mockingbird, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Ender's Game, and a large collection of non-fiction.

Cover Image Description: To take this photo, I used two high-powered flashlights to create dramatic backlighting. The mixture of blue and white light with the mahogany wood creates a discordant, yet interesting mood. I also used a very wide-aperture lens to achieve the shallow focus needed to isolate the sheet music from the rest of the scene. This photo also uses harsh contrast and leading lines to create a balanced feel. Incidentally, the sheet music is the virtuosic piano solo at the beginning of Beethoven's Chorfantasie, which is essentially a cadenza.
