Reports of journalism's demise, including the "We're going out of business" banner in our special edition issue yesterday, were greatly exaggerated. As our journalism adviser informed us on Tuesday, The Legend has enough members to set sail once again for its 50th anniversary next year.

Underclassmen - the counselors have said that tomorrow they will be passing out the classes you have selected for next year. This is the last chance for those who want to choose journalism to do so. Please don't let The Legend fade before its 50th anniversary!

We will also be distributing our sixth issue of the year tomorrow, so look forward to that too!

Dear fellow Piedmont Hills High School students,

For 49 years, The Legend has been a beloved messenger to the students of Piedmont Hills High School. Today, however, we are greatly shocked and disheartened to bring you sad news: the news, laughs, opinions, and advice that The Legend provides to Piedmont will all come to an end next year.

Out of a minimum of 30 students needed to keep the Legend alive, only 17 have shown their interest to be part of next year’s staff, 13 fewer than the required amount. If we do not reach this number, simply put, The Legend will cease to exist for its 50th anniversary.

The Legend is and always has been an important tradition of Piedmont Hills. The paper provides information and knowledge to its readers, and invaluable skills and memories to those who produce it. Since the 1960s, the Journalism staff have shaped the newspaper into a stage for school events, international news, heartfelt opinions, and, more recently, a platform for debate and discourse among students and teachers.

Without your help, this tradition will disappear. Please join the effort to save Journalism at Piedmont Hills by enrolling in the class, or encouraging others to enroll. You may still talk to the counselors and ask to change your electives. If you have any questions regarding the class, please contact us in person, at [email protected], or through our page. If you would like to find out more about the Journalism experience, please refer to these articles featured in the latest issue. (http://phhsthelegend.org/2015/01/30/journalism-a-day-in-the-life/ and http://phhsthelegend.org/2015/01/30/join-journalism-we-have-issues/)

In this day and age, when so many must fight for the simple right to be heard in their society, we cannot allow our own voices fade away as the result of our apathy. We hope that you may help The Legend see its 50th birthday.

Sincerely,
The Legend Staff 2014-2015

The death was officially deemed a suicide. He was a PHHS alumnus, and out of respect for the family, we will not release his name for the time being. Please continue to be respectful of this man and his identity. Our hearts go out to him and anyone who was affected by his passing.

03/21/2015

During second period this morning, a PHHS physical education class discovered a dead body in the swimming pool, according to NBC.

SF Gates reports that the man’s body was strapped down with a 30-pound weight; the man himself appears to be in his 20s.

Superintendent Chris Funk has confirmed through email that the body belonged to an adult male. The coroner’s office has yet to release the man’s identity, but to Mr. Funk’s best knowledge, the man is not a PHHS staff member or student. The pool, which is surrounded by a fence topped with barbed wire, was secured by 7pm last night and opened today at around 8am.

“(M)y heart goes out to the family of the victim and to the students and teacher who discovered the body,” he writes.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the San Jose Police Dept. received a phone call at 8:47am to arrive at the school, 27 minutes after the start of second period. In third period, teachers, save for those directing students away from the gym and pool area, were called to meet in the library during break. At the start of fourth period, students were informed of the incident, then dismissed from campus at 11am.

Teachers and staff members interviewed by The Legend, including Ms. Williams, have declined comment on the subject due to lack of information available. In a mass phone call to the students and parents, Ms. Williams confirmed that inter-class school competition FANTASTICS (Fun At Night Through Activities and Sports To Increase Class Spirit) will be postponed until April. In the same message, Ms. Williams announced that Saturday school and Monday’s classes will commence as usual.

Media personnel such as NBC News were on campus by 11am. News helicopters also circled the school, with aerial photos of the pool often released with the media’s website articles.

Swim team practices were cancelled for the day. Other after-school activities, such as the weekly Math Team meeting and FANTASTICS practice, were also cancelled.

When asked what the senior class will do for FANTASTICS, especially in regards to the theme, The Purge, senior class publicist Vina Trac says that it is too soon for comments.

The Legend will continue investigating, and will update with more information as it becomes available.

03/20/2015

If anyone has any comments about the incident today, please email or message us through Facebook. Our reporters are working on a brief article summarizing the events of the day, to be published later in the afternoon.

Reminder for those who are interested in saving journalism to talk to their counselors tomorrow. If you truly cannot spare a class, then we encourage you to put journalism as an alternate, or just advocate for journalism's continuing existence with 17 people who have already signed up.

For the last three years at least, journalism has functioned with fewer than 30 students (in fact, last year and the year before, we worked with fewer than 20 students). This is why the sudden requirement of 30 people per class was so shocking. We have people who will be communicating with the counselors as soon as school begins, so in the meantime, a spike in interest will really help our cause.
