She was homeless in New York. A stranger handed her $5. She still laughs about it.

Grace and her boyfriend were homeless on the streets of New York with nothing. The person who stopped to help was a complete stranger who was having her own crisis at that exact moment. She handed Grace five dollars anyway. Grace tells it laughing. But underneath the laughter is som**hing quietly remarkable about the way strangers can show up for each other at rock bottom. This is one moment from a much longer conversation Burning Boat Films filmed with Grace, a survivor of abuse, addiction, and homelessness.

Grace laughs telling this story now. At the time, it was anything but funny.

Her boyfriend was so far gone on a bad batch of drugs that he became convinced som**hing was happening that simply wasn't. It's one of those moments that captures just how deep into chaos their lives had spiralled, and how Grace found a way to hold onto her sense of humour through all of it.

There's no single right way to get clean. David will tell you that himself.

He tried AA. He had authority issues with the sponsors. He walked away from the program and did it his own way- which, depending on who you ask, is exactly what you're not supposed to do.

He's been clean for years. He runs his own welding shop. When I asked him how he was doing, he said "I'm happy."

After everything he'd been through, that felt like the most earned sentence in the whole documentary.

David's best friend told him som**hing at dinner — som**hing he'd never told anyone. They were just eating pizza. And then he said it.

A year later, he was in prison for the rest of his life.

I posted an ad on Craigslist looking for interesting people to film a documentary. David responded.

But when I showed up to film him, his friend was just kind of hanging around. Had nothing to do with any of it.
And then out of nowhere he told me the Luciferians took over his church.

I don't know why, but finding random people and hearing them say things like that is one of the most satisfying parts of making these films. You show up for one reason and the world just hands you som**hing else entirely.
