About four hours into our first big festival together, the sky decided to test our commitment to the brand…and entrepreneurship.

My niece — resident silent business partner, and definitely the only one unbothered — took over Doppler radar duty from a camp chair. Phone in hand. Face doing absolutely nothing. The rest of us stood under a red tent that was working very hard and looking a little worried about it.

We didn’t pack it in. We just got quieter, wetter, and slightly more impressed with ourselves.

There's about six weeks of live outdoor music left in the Lakes Region and White Mountains — and the best of it doesn't cost anything.

Most people I talk to don't realize how much is happening on nights they're already free: bandstands on the water in Wolfeboro and Alton Bay, a town band in Center Harbor on Fridays, tented concerts at Castle in the Clouds. Blues or bagpipes in the Whites...your call which one appeals.

Some of it requires a ticket. And some of it just requires showing up.

I put together where I'm pointing the car for what's left of the season — free, ticketed, and everything in between.

The best label in the world can't tell you what a five-minute conversation at a farm stand can.

Whose hands touched this. How the animals were raised. Why they grow it the way they grow it. You don't get that from packaging — you get it from standing at a folding table asking someone who actually knows.

That's the region we're leaning on, and reinforcing, every time we build a box. Not a supply chain — people. The woman at the Saturday market who cards and spins her own wool. A hundred-year-old farm that's still figuring out what grows best here. A cheese we tasted once and haven't stopped thinking about since.

When we say we're sending someone a piece of this place, this is what we mean — not a theme, an actual conversation, had in person, that most people never get to have.

Potentially controversial opinion, but I love rainy days on the water. I’m out this afternoon on the M/S Mount Washington which means a cozy atmospheric ride on a ship older than the Titanic.

There’s almost no traffic out here, there’s a choice between tea or coffee or a craft cocktail and it’s a smooth, lovely time waiting for the next island to emerge from the fog to greet me.

There's a particular kind of July evening up here — the heat breaks around seven, porches fill in, someone's grilling, the lake goes that flat pewter color right before the first fireworks of the night catch somewhere across the water. It's a lot of season packed into one month, and this year Jenn split her usual roundup into two pieces instead of trying to wrestle it all into one.

The first is just the Fourth — which, town by town across the Lakes Region, isn't one day at all but an unfolding from July 2nd to the 12th. The second is everything else this region gets up to in July when nobody's lighting fireworks.

Where to find fresh, local produce all summer long!

I've been on the big lake more this summer than maybe any summer before it.

Some days it's cool and foggy, the kind of grey that makes the shoreline disappear into itself. Other days, like this week, the sky does that cotton candy thing at sunset that makes you stop talking mid-sentence.

But the part that gets me every time, fog or fire-sky, is the same: standing at the bow, water sluicing off on either side, looking out at islands and the mountains behind them like they're keeping watch.
