Former local priests named in new Catholic Church sexual abuse list

Cases of child sexual abuse by Catholic priests and people in other church positions have been widespread across the globe and has led to many allegations. The new Atlanta list shows priests were “credibly” accused at many metro area churches, including Buckhead’s Cathedral of Christ the King, which is the archdiocese’s mother church, Brookhaven’s Our Lady of the Assumption and Dunwoody’s All Saints Catholic Church.

Restaurant owner paints over Buford Highway mural after concerns over immigration politics

A popular mural celebrating the immigrant experience on an outside wall of the Havana Sandwich Shop restaurant on Buford Highway was partly painted over this week due to political concerns. The artist is alleging censorship of its message to embrace immigrants, but the restaurant owner to says because the mural was recently vandalized, it has become too politicized and her business must remain neutral on sensitive political issues like immigration.

Anonymous funders of Brookhaven parks bond opposition draw criticism

Anonymous funders providing yard signs, mailers and a website opposing Brookhaven’s parks bond ballot question may be violating campaign finance laws, bond supporters allege. Some of the public opponents say that no laws are being broken and that others are remaining anonymous out of fear of retribution.

Parks bond supports say the secrecy being utilized by the “vote no” effort goes against the grain of the opponents’ key criticism that the city has not been transparent about the entire parks bond process. Those publicly speaking out against the parks bond say there is no organized effort by those funding a website, signs and mailer, and one person added it is none of anyone’s business who is paying for the private materials.

Behind-the-scenes master plan change becomes Brookhaven parks bond issue

A major redesign of Lynwood Park, never before seen by the general public, is among the projects on Brookhaven’s $40 million parks bond that goes before voters Nov. 6.

Bond opponents say that behind-the-scenes redesign shows that city officials can’t be trusted to deliver the parks bond’s promised projects. City leaders say the key opponents were directly involved in the redesign process, even if the general public was not, and that if the bond is approved, a citizens oversight committee will review its parks projects.
