9.8 A+ sealed but still tearin’ up our hearts. NSYNC’s self-titled debut was released in Germany in 1997, followed by a March 1998 international release. Initial sales were slow, but then came their performance on a Disney Channel in Concert Special in 1998. Almost overnight, NSYNC was No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went 10x Platinum with more than 10 million copies shipped to the US. They went on to become one of the best-selling boybands of all time with four studio albums and five tours, selling more than 70 million records before their indefinite hiatus in 2002 when key member Justin Timberlake decided to explore his solo career. NSYNC briefly reunited in 2023 to release “Better Place” for the Trolls Band Together film and performed together at Timberlake’s One Night Only concert in 2024, more than a decade after their last performance.

At the request of Konami’s European division, Metal Gear Solid hit Game Boy Color screens in 2000. Released in Japan as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, this game utilized the overhead 2D format of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and newer elements. However, it takes place seven years after the original 1987 Metal Gear events in an alternative continuity story. Players and critics alike loved it, earning it a top spot in several best Game Boy game lists.

It’s not every day that the first and second installment get the same grade. Halo: Combat Evolved was initially set for release on MacOS and Windows, but after Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000, Halo became the launch game for Microsoft’s first console, the Xbox. Despite its slow uptake, it went on to become one of the highest-selling games and won numerous awards, including for its incredible soundtrack by Martin O’Donnell. Many consider Halo the reason for the success of Xbox. Come 2004, Halo 2 had big shoes to fill. And it did. Halo 2 became the best-selling first-generation Xbox game and is considered one of the best games of all time.

Move over Tetris, Pokémon Puzzle Challenge would like a word. This 2000 Game Boy Color title took inspiration from Pokémon Gold & Silver video games and allowed players to puzzle their way through the Johto region with various modes of play. Anyone else want Pokémon puzzle games to make a comeback?

Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 feature debut Reservoir Dogs stars a killer lineup as a group of diamond thieves in a heist gone wrong. It’s now an indie classic and a cult film in its own right, and in the 30+ years since its release Reservoir Dogs has become a real cultural fixture among cinema fans everywhere.
