Repairing roads, educating workers and maintaining the foundations of a productive economy are routinely attacked as “socialism.”

But maintaining an economic system is not the same as abolishing it. Putting oil in the engine doesn’t confiscate the automobile—it keeps the machine moving.

Public investment isn’t necessarily socialism. Sometimes it’s simply what a functioning country does if it expects to produce, build and remain capable of great things.

Healthcare. Housing. Public works. Public education. Labor rights. Social Security.

The moment government becomes involved, somebody shouts, “It’s socialism!”

That accusation is political theater, not serious economic analysis. If every government-built, government-regulated or government-guaranteed institution is socialism, then the United States has been socialist since the Post Office was established in 1789.

Donald Trump’s grievance was personal: despite his wealth and privilege, he remained bitter about acceptance by the social and financial elite.

The grievances of workers, farmers, and small-business owners were different—and often quite real. They watched economic security disappear, communities deteriorate, industries leave, and political institutions become increasingly unresponsive.

Trump’s political achievement was to fuse these very different grievances. He made his resentment their resentment, gave their economic pain his enemies, and persuaded millions that avenging Donald Trump would somehow avenge them.

But does Trump actually intend to remedy their grievances—or does he need those wounds to remain open?
