For aspiring dog trainers, having a “system” in your methods helps you become more organized in your training and prevents you from making avoidable mistakes. If you don’t have a dog training system yet, learn from others and adapt what best works for you! Your system will change over time so that your training - and relationships with dogs and dog owners - becomes more refined.

Mastering your material doesn’t mean you have to stick to only one concept. Researching new things, learning a variety of techniques, or practicing another skillset gives you the chance of mastering your craft from different perspectives. Don’t limit yourself! Make the time to see what else you can achieve if you put in the effort!

As you start your career, finding a good mentor will help guide you in the right direction. Claiming you don’t need one will only make things harder and life is hard enough! If you have trouble asking for help, just reach out! The worst they can say is no, and that’s when you try again! Ask any leader in any industry and they’ll tell you that mentorship is not only one of the keys to success but also personal growth 🌟

When mastering any material, it’s important to understand the difference between research and fluency. You can read all the books or watch all the videos you can on dog training but when you’re working with a real dog, will you have the fluency to deliver results? When you master fluency, there’s no thinking required because you’re reacting based on your seasoned experience!

For aspiring dog trainers, it’s safe to say that YouTube University won’t teach you how to become a professional dog trainer. No one is perfect but by mastering your material, you gain the confidence from honing your craft and giving dog owners the assurance that their pet is in the best hands!

Question for dog owners: as you research dog trainers and board & train programs, what are you looking for? What is it about board & train programs that you feel is the best fit for your dog? From our experience, most owners choose it for its convenience, its “summer camp” structure, and for its efficiency & speed. Why do YOU prefer it?

For dog owners out there: understanding the nuances of a dog command will help you strengthen your relationship with them. A command can either help or hinder your dog’s development and how they respond to it is a good indicator of whether they’re learning or not. Value each command as if it were goal-oriented!

For dog owners out there, taking your dog out for a walk can be a great exercise when it comes to impulse control. Setting limitations on what they can or can’t sniff will not only help your dog understand to control its impulses but will also make your loose leash-walk a breeze without having to stop at every bush 🌳

For dog owners out there: do you think about how often you should heel your dog when going for a walk? Do you worry that your dog is staying behind too long or speeding ahead or getting too distracted? If so, you might be overthinking it. When going for a walk, it’s invaluable to let your dog have enough time to observe the environment around them, whether it’s sniffing or interacting with another dog. Next time, try practicing heeling your dog 10% - 15% of your walk and see if that will mark a difference in your dog’s behavior!
