Every once in a while, you work with someone who reminds you why you do this.

Robert came in with music that mattered deeply to him, and trusted me to help shape it without losing the heart of it. We had honest conversations, deep dives, and a shared sense of where the songs needed to go.

Most bands are afraid to make their listeners uncomfortable.

But rhythmic displacement creates subconscious unease that makes the eventual resolution feel massive.

It’s not about complex time signatures. It’s about layering competing rhythmic centers that your brain can’t reconcile. That restless feeling keeps people hooked.

When everything finally snaps back into alignment, the relief is palpable.

That chorus you’ve been obsessing over might be perfect. The problem could be everything that comes before it.

I’ve heard countless tracks where the verse arrangement is so dense, so emotionally loaded, that by the time you hit the chorus, there’s nowhere left to go. It’s like starting a conversation by yelling.

Tool gets this. Radiohead gets this. Porcupine Tree definitely gets this.

The most powerful choruses often come from verses that feel almost uncomfortably restrained. That tension—the sense that something’s being held back—is what makes the eventual release hit you in the chest.

Next time you’re arranging, try the 30% rule: remove 30% of your verse elements and see what happens to your chorus. You might be surprised.

I’ve been a bit quiet since the fires in LA. We are fine, we didn’t have to evacuate, but being in Santa Monica we were watching it very closely. We were on the verge on evacuating several times.

I know quite a few people that were affected by the fires, and it’s been a strange time with everything else going on in the world.

This week was the NAMM show, and I’ve gone every year for many years now. I used to hate the chaos of the show floor, but long ago I discovered the extensive schedule of talks, so now I make a point to go every day of the show and see as many of the talks as I can.

It was really great to see everyone moving forward as best they can, and to be uplifted by all the great talks. I personally went to hear people talk about everything from creative songwriting to AI innovations to studio branding that aligns with your personality and archetypes.

My heart goes out to all those affected in the fires, and my gratitude goes out to the industry en mass at the NAMM show that is moving forward in spite of the challenges in the world.
