Outrageous Ads with Sandwich Boards

Two weeks ago the Artillery Arms pub in east London was broken into. But instead of being disheartened, quick-thinking manager Tony Bennett decided to turn the situation to his advantage. Opening the pub as normal on Sunday morning, he wrote a sign on the pub’s outdoor sandwich board which read, “This pub is so good that someone tried to get in eight hours before we open!” and posted a photo on Facebook. Turning Down An Offer—A story

Since opening their first store in Wicker Park in 2008, brothers Greg and Paul Stellatos have twice been offered investment capital for Go Grocer, their chain of health-focused convenience stores. They turned down the deals. Paul Stellatos, 35, explains why. It certainly is an honor that there are people willing to invest millions of dollars—it lets us know we have a formula that works and we're on the right path. [ 741 more words. ]

When Your Business Becomes Cool

Nick Horween joined his family’s century-old Chicago tannery business as a vice president in 2009 in the middle of a recession and an ongoing movement toward offshoring. Sales were down, but he picked up on a curious phenomenon: Buzz was building organically. Horween was getting mentions on such fashion sites as Hypebeast and Gear Patrol, and designers such as Hiroki Nakamura from Tokyo-based Visvim wanted to visit the factory. [ 592 more words. ]

Keeping Good Employees

Employee retention can often be a serious issue for smaller businesses that don’t have the time and manpower needed to conduct frequent hiring processes. New startups and smaller organizations are also more likely to lack the budget and financial resources required to provide the most competitive salaries and generous benefits packages. Ensuring that new-hires are the best possible fit, addressing the needs and concerns of staff in a timely fashion and offering even small perks, can all go a long way towards ensuring employees are more willing to stick with a company. How to Respond to Reviews

Every small business failure is unique in terms of the particular decisions and events that precipitated it, but there are some common mistakes.
