It was such a great pleasure working with the outstanding DP Kira Kelly, ASC on the Daytime Emmy-nominated Hulu Original "East Los High". The show's big push towards inclusion and social change was very present in our minds when working on skin tones, environments, and looks. ☺

To boost and significantly optimize resources of the project, we developed a hybrid workflow with DIT, Harriman, enabling us to non-destructively use the color developed on-set, ignore it completely and start working from scratch, or combine both.

Repost. Great insight on The Alienist process Cathal!

“I knew I wanted to light “The Alienist: Angel of Darkness” in a very stylistic way but in some way maintain a sense of naturalism to the image. I chose the ALEXA Mini and the ARRI Master Anamorphics as my camera package.

Even though I was using a lot of smoke as diffusion, the Master Anamorphics still rendered an image that was sharp from edge to edge, but had a naturalistic feel. I was also working with a lot of blue screen set extensions and I didn’t want too much flare but I was still looking for an anamorphic feel especially on the closeups which is what I got from the Master Anamorphics. The lenses don’t draw attention to themselves with very little artefacts or breathing but they always maintained a cinematic, pleasing image.

In “Angel of Darkness,” we wanted an image that was full of contrast both in the interior scenes and exterior scenes but an image that never lost detail in the dark areas. I found that shooting RAW on the ALEXA Mini and using the Master Anamorphics that we had so much information in the image even at very low light levels. The 1.9 stop across the set (180mm at 2.8) was amazing and enabled me at one point to light 2 of our leading cast with one candle. I was nervous but thankfully it worked out in the end! In fact, I would say 90% of the shots were at 1.9 (Sorry Chris and Rida 1st ACs!)

Pairing the Anamorphics with the ALEXA Mini was an easy match as I needed a camera that was extremely versatile and that wouldn't compromise on image quality. One minute a Mini was handheld in a carriage and the next minute it was on a technocrane.

I didn’t want to compromise how I was going to light “Angel of Darkness” and this is where the ARRI Master Anamorphics and the ALEXA Mini really came into their own. Ultimately, it’s all about telling a story and I felt with the camera package I had I got a naturalistic feel in a very stylistic setting which was what I was after.”
