We’re bringing out the apes again with Unreal Fest 2024!

Join us for our panel, “Visualizing Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” on Tuesday, October 1st at 4:15pm in Room 321 with Halon’s Visualization Supervisor Casey Pyke and Virtual Art Department Supervisor Jess Marley as they discuss anything and everything from adding character animation to using motion capture with the Unreal Engine.

: starring saw the light of day in 2022, but the filming process took place during the pandemic when balancing remote work and safety precautions played a crucial role in the filming process.

To combat the challenges of collaborating remotely and ensuring safe, in-person working conditions, Halon created bespoke virtual cameras that could capture director Robert Zemeckis' unique filmmaking style while allowing fully remote artists to access live sessions simultaneously. Halon quickly adapted to this new movie-making process and successfully collaborated with Zemeckis to bring his vision to life.

Halon's Director of Visualization, Ryan McCoy says: "Crafting the Kerbal Space Program 2 trailer was a true delight. To achieve the epic inspiring space shots we immediately leveraged the Unreal engine to elevate the look development, allowing all departments to work on the scenes in unison. It was a privilege to contribute to a project that celebrates inspiration over the usual action scenes, a true love letter to space enthusiasts."

: While Halon is at the forefront of visualization within film and television, we also work within gaming cinematics and had the chance to collaborate with the Fortnite team in 2020.

Cinematic Director/Supervisor Grant Olin says: "Working with Epic to create their cinematics, and over the years build our world class animation and cinematics team, has really been a dream opportunity to tell short stories with incredible characters from so many universes."

: It's no secret that in 2019 took the world by storm.

For Halon, though, it was more than just a really cool project: it was the catalyst that led us to develop our Virtual Art Department (VAD), which continues to push the boundaries of what we can do with real-time technology.

VAD Producer Andrew Ritter says: "After our experience on the first season of The Mandalorian, we made the VAD official and developed a robust team of environment artists, asset artists, and lighting and technical specialists. Then, to bring greater and greater fidelity to our virtual sets, we brought on a photogrammetry team to bring real-world assets directly to real-time.”

Our VAD team now does work in multiple industries outside of film, including live events, commercials, influencer content, broadcast sports, digital preservation, and education.

We provided visualization services for the entire helicopter sequence, which included flying down Beverly Boulevard, nearly crashing into a sightseeing bus, and eventually crash landing onto a golf course.
