Today we wanted to share a few words about the artist ♥️

Rebecca van Beeck is a theatre designer, artist and educator from South Africa. She has lived and worked in Cape Town, Stockholm, Zurich, Bangkok, Los Angeles and London. A child of the 90s, she enjoys making necklaces and reading recipes. Her work is influenced by her background in architecture with her approach linking across spatial design, urban and participatory research, stage and costume design, and live and visual art.

She was once taken out of a movie theater for crying too much as a child, but her love for the theatre and performance continued to grow. She is interested in the relationship between space and performance, with the notion of performance ranging from everyday routines to theatrical movements on stage, which she originally self-termed as “making space”. Rebecca considers her design process an ‘improvisation framework’ for collaboration and collective making. Ideas around improvisation extend to her visual arts practice in which she embraces intuitive mark making as a meditative process, which she has been doing since the MS Paint of the early 2000s.

She is designing her first opera, Tamerlano, in London this autumn, and is likely to return to South Africa for its summer sun, which continues to inspire her favourite colour, yellow.

Waves of “flow” states, followed by the “waves” of “anxiety” building the cycle of process.

“ASMR linked to anxiety - people who find the sensation relaxing tend to be more anxious, but that it provides short-term relief. Drawing, then, becomes both a coping mechanism and an addictive distraction. But then distraction is also a necessity at times.” - says Rebecca.

Visit Rebecca’s solo show at @studio106la on June 13 to see her progress-driven work that addresses both the “flow” states and the “tension” moments of life.

“ASMR skirts on the edge of being deeply satisfying and repulsive - like the reaction triggered by scraping your fingernails over a blackboard. I struggle watching ASMR videos, the tingling I get from them is experienced Spanish speakers “grima.” The people most frequently mentioned an “unpleasant sensation,” “shivering,” “sounds,” and “repulsion.”

When we spoke about ASMR with Rebecca, social media and the way we approach it was mentioned to bring up somewhat similar notions...

“It’s so easy to become critical of how we get by… binging YouTube? Doom scrolling … how we both consume and create content that feeds into this. The role of the screen, an addiction to blue light. Blue light has been linked to depression.” – says the artist.

In the past few years, when lockdowns have minimized in-person human interaction while humanity was undergoing an unprecedented health crisis, social media was our shared window to the world, and reasonably, we all got more dependent on technology. Furthermore, following the pandemic turbulent geopolitical events have glued our attention to the screens once again.
In times like this, we feel the intrinsic urgency to stay up-to-date with everything that happens around us coincides with the longing for time away from the screen. And once again, we are turning to the processes that are comforting and triggering at the same time. Rebecca’s show sets its premise at this very junction.

Our conversation, however, ends with the reminder that [...] “ultimately, we need to remain gentle - we need to be gentle on ourselves.”- says Rebecca. And,indeed, we fully agree with you, Rebecca.

We will pose a series of questions in relation to addictive, seductive and numbing moments that we engage with by opening the show on Jun 13.

We hope to see you there.

Drawing as ASMR

The #selfcare series opens with an online show by Rebecca van Beek (@scribbled_egg), who unravels the duality of ASMR as drawing. ASMR drawing, as a form of artistic work and meditation, is existing on the edge of being deeply satisfying and repulsive and unfolds as both a coping mechanism and an addictive distraction. Rebecca is interested in this friction and puts out her exploration of the subject on display from June 13 to July 11, 2022.

The show goes live on June 13 🎈✅

We are thrilled to announce the first show in the series - Rebecca’s “Drawing as ASMR” sets forth the theme of flow-states as a form of artistic practice.

Points of tension within tue show are set on the edge of this process-driven flow processes and the notion of procrastination. These become the challenging ground for investigation addressed by the show. This loop prompted by this feedback system that exists on the premise of creative meditation, self care practice as well as notion of negation are reviewed from both problematic and therapeutic points of view.

We are excited to share this show with you all.

We have just closed an amazing show, and have created a quick overview of Erin's show: "MS Paint Music"

Let us remind you that Erin Demastes is an experimental composer, performer, and instrument maker whose research combines sound and technology with humor, drama, and absurdity. She uses everyday, household objects and hacked electronics for both her fixed media work and performances and subverts the use and perception of these materials with play and experimentation. By placing items in theatrical settings, Erin brings out the character of things we normally may not think twice about. In addition to her interest in physical materials, Erin also experiments with instruction and interaction design by playing with the boundaries of her scores, performances, and installations to find a balance between structure and uncertainty.

Erin has presented her work at many venues including Coaxial Arts Foundation, Human
Resources LA, Betalevel, Soundpedro at Angeles Gate Cultural Center, Center for New Music, Navel LA, Mills College, and UC Santa Cruz and has performed at MoCA, Automata, The Women’s Center for Creative Work, Santa Monica Public Library, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and more. In addition to performing and building installations, Erin teaches composition and electronics workshops and has taught at Calarts, Pasadena City College, Coaxial Arts, and the Hackaday Superconference. She often works with organizations such as Indexical and the wulf. and is on the board of the Dog Star Orchestra.
Erin received an M.F.A. in Experimental Sound Practices and Integrated Media from California Institute of the Arts, a B.M. in jazz studies and piano performance from Loyola University New Orleans, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in experimental music and digital media at Louisiana State University. She worked as an audio technician, artist, and educator for five years in Los Angeles and as a jazz and classical pianist, composer, and arranger for ten years in the New Orleans area.

Please visit her website https://www.erindemastes.com/ to explore her works in more detial.

And of course, we are promising you that there is always more art to come...

Erin’s scores play with balancing improvisation and prescribed action and all lie somewhere in between. By setting up boundaries that performers can bounce off of rather than following in a single file line, the pieces retain shape and form while allowing for individual creativity and surprising outcomes.

Follow the paths to find all of the hidden pieces. The curation of this exhibit follows the vision of the composer so closely that the exhibit itself is its own score, a game within a game, and a scavenger hunt all wrapped into one-- blurring the line between instruction and play, rules and freedom, order and disorder, and curator and composer.

A tiny hint on what the curation highlights. Erin’s response to the last changes in show’s setting:
“I love how you have to follow the map to find each score! What a fun idea :):)
I also like all the little nested links like "read more about verbs here" It kind of makes the whole site a scavenger hunt, which I love…”

“Yes, by looking at the images “generated” by Artificial Intelligence, or Houdini, Maya, Grasshopper 3D models and renders the software is recognizable!

You don't need to know exactly how the code behind the button works but you extract it in order to be creative. All softwares used in digital art and architecture like Houdini, Illustrator, Cinema 4D, Unreal, etc were developed to fulfill very specific tasks on a very narrow field of knowledge. Yet, only a tiny elite of knowledgeable artists can use them because you need time and skills to understand the interface and the program itself.

In our opinion media is the output of software. It’s what the user was able to extract. Accept the central role of software! It is the software that decides on the form of the media output…” read more from the full essay by @distant___realities published as part of the show.

These are the details of the works shown as part of “PAINT: the creative potential of odd software” exhibition at the studio that explores the oddities of both our attitudes and prejudices towards the softwares and its outputs, and constrains of image production under these circumstances👌☝️🌎

Don’t forget- today is the day to discover these works as we will be closing at 11:59 pm.

“What is digital aesthetics today?

Today, the computer program often defines the aesthetic. A software wraps up a certain set of tools and the aesthetic outcome depends on them.

Those tools are a result of a codification process that reduces the complexity of the task ex*****on into a simple clickable button within the interface. This is what Andrew Witt calls “encapsulated knowledge” (Witt 2010). This reduces both the user’s design knowledge but also creative diversity within the same software. Yes, by looking at the images “generated” by Artificial Intelligence, or Houdini, Maya, Grasshopper 3D models and renders the software is recognizable!”

Think about it ☝️and visit the show at @studio106la before Nov 30 to discover the idea in its full low-res detail 👌
