Getting laid off three times taught me something one layoff never could.

The first time, it was surreal.
The second time (eleven years later), it was deja vu all over again.
The third time, I just had to shake my head and laugh.

When you have decades in the digital marketing game, scrambling for another random chair is just survival mode.

The third layoff became my checkpoint.

I stopped asking who would hire me next.

I started asking what I actually wanted to build:

• What did 20+ years of reps give me that nobody can take away?
• Who in my circle already trusts the quality of my work?
• How can I promote myself in the most economical way? (Hint: you're reading it right now.)
• How do I build enough leverage so one person's decision never controls my future again?

Your hard-earned skills and your network do not vanish when your badge stops working.

If you are staring at a career curveball today, take a breath. Assess your checkpoint. Focus less on where you are stuck and more on where you actually want to go.

Use the leverage you spent years building.

What did your biggest career reset teach you?

"I don't think this is going to work."

That's what my supervisor said when I pitched creating a dedicated social media group for our loudest critics.

The plan was simple. Give them a direct space to vent and surface real solutions I could bring straight to executive leadership.

I had kept quiet during the original meeting while everyone talked in circles. Instead of speaking up in the moment, I put together a full proposal using community data to back up the risk.

My CEO bought in and invited me to present it to the leadership team.

I walked in nervous and fired up. Half the room nodded in approval. The other half shook their heads.

Then we launched.

What followed was an avalanche of profanity and unfiltered complaints that moved faster than I could type.

I responded to every single person and tried to find common ground.

The audience wasn't having it. They thought the whole thing was a setup, or they simply laughed at the effort.

Two months later, leadership pulled the plug.

And yet, I never saw it as a failure.

I would rather step into the ring and take the hits fighting than sit quietly in the back of the room.

Today is 🦇

My favorite superhero!

And while Batman isn’t “technically” a superhero as he has no superhuman abilities, so many admire him for his abilities.

Annnnd you can apply them to your real world experience!

As The World’s Greatest Detective, he demonstrates high intelligence solving mysteries, analyzing problems, and outsmarting villains.

As the Caped Crusader, he pushes his body to its limits of stress and agility to be the best version of himself.

As The Dark Knight, he uses his psychological prowess by terrifying his enemies and fights for justice for the underprivileged.

We could all be a little like Batman everyday.

A past manager once told me point blank, “I don’t think social media has a place here.”

I was the organization’s Digital Media Manager, running nearly everything on my own.

Early on, I understood the skepticism. When social gets treated purely as a broadcast megaphone, it easily looks like noise.

So I modified my approach from simply BROADCASTING and added LISTENING.

Every comment, question, and frustration became frontline customer intelligence. I mapped those pain points and brought them directly to colleagues across other departments.

Our teams were eager to help solve them.

Better still, the real breakthrough happened when that reporting caught the attention of our CEO.

He invited me to present our findings directly to the board and executive leadership.

Social media stopped being viewed as an isolated channel and became our clearest window into the community we served.

When you use social to solve real problems for people, advocacy follows naturally.

My smile in the photo is what persistence and patience look like when the work speaks for itself.

When working remotely, you rarely meet the colleagues at your company, let alone from different departments.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing several of my fellow Tampa Sentara Health employees at a Tarpon Springs meetup

While most of them were from the clinical and IT side, I was the lone Marketing Ops member of the group. (MOps, represent!)

I heard stories from people outside my normal work circle, shared my experiences as a transplant from another state (I think only one was a native Floridian), and broke bread with an extended part of my Sentara team.

And while most of them lived within 30-45 minutes from the restaurant, I drove the furthest locally to Tarpon Springs (1.75 hours!).

It was worth it to see how my role fits in the bigger picture of our organization.

Here’s to the next meetup for the Tampa remote workers!

It was a quarter of a century ago and a lifetime apart, but the memories of today, 9/11/2001, still echo with me.

The tragedies of that day linger, but it was - and still is - the stories of unyielding heroism and altruism on the days that followed that revealed to me a more significant truth.

From one moment, 9/12/2001, we came together as Americans.

We were unified as a nation. No party lines drawn or fingers pointed.

We confronted the darkness. Even in the face of the inevitable, we stood up and fought back.

We were gentler and more compassionate to one another - to our friends and family, our neighbors, and even strangers. We hugged our loved ones more tightly and closer.

Crazy to think how "American" we were 25 years ago.

Not at all crazy to dream that we can still accomplish it together today if we simply dared to try.

May we be more like the Americans of 9/12.

I stopped caring when I turned 50.

Caring what other people thought of me.
Caring about making other people happy.
Caring about how others felt I should live my life.

What do I care about now?

Time with my family (especially our son who is growing up faster than I would like).
My physical health. I want to live without a walker or scooter at 90.
My sanity. Balancing and building a life, career, and freelance business I am proud of, without killing myself in the process.

Having ambition is great.

Having the health and presence to actually enjoy it is better.

( here’s me not caring and enjoying a simple pleasure: peach milk boba tea. My son has impeccable timing with taking photos 🫠)
