For children ages 1–4, drowning is the #1 cause of death in the United States. In 2023, 457 children ages 1–4 died from “unintentional drowning”, compared with 301 from motor-vehicle traffic crashes. (CDC, 2023)

Would any parent look at those statistics and decide their child doesn’t need a car seat? No. We strap them in every time because we understand the risk. Yet when the risk is greater around water, teaching a child to swim becomes optional. “We don’t have a pool, so I can’t teach my kid..” Those are excuses. Kids encounter pools, rivers, lakes, beaches and other bodies of water whether you planned for it or not.

The CDC categorizes these deaths as “unintentional drownings.” Yet drownings are preventable. Teaching kids to swim and read a river. Some consciously teaches them about recurrence….. as you learn to cross the river with the pendulum effect, you understand that you must float with the river rather than fight it the same holds True with a rip Current. Teaching kids how to swim builds their confidence keeps them safe and enables them to help other kids in the future. You don’t need a fancy pool you need an involved parent.

Gummy Bear just turned 4 and he’s still out here acting like a 3-year-old who can’t change a trailer tire. Montessori said practical life skills, so here we are. Gotta earn that jet ski and build some character. 💪
