This episode comes out just days after Liv would have turned 21. Birthdays can be incredibly hard, but as those of us who live with grief know, you never quite know which days or moments will hit the hardest.

This week on the podcast I sat down with Fitness and Travel Professional who shared the highlight reel theory she heard about that right before you die, you see a highlight reel of your life. And when her daughter Angelina was diagnosed with a rare and fatal cancer at age 3, she worried that if it was true, her highlight reel would not be all that exciting.

During Angelina’s seven and a half years of treatment her life was also filled with huge birthday parties, cruises, Disney trips, indoor skydiving, swimming with sea turtles, ziplining in Hawaii, and checking off as much of Angelina’s bucket list as they possibly could.

Angelina never set out to be an inspiration, and neither did her mom. But the way they lived fully and thrived in spite of cancer gave so many other families hope.

Angelina had a long bucket list, and as the end was nearing, her mom, Danielle, was determined to make every last thing happen, including one final ride at Universal.

Those trips and adventures brought Angelina so much joy, but they also created memories that continue to live on in everyone who loved her.

Angelina was just three and a half when she was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma.

Faced with devastating odds, her mom, Danielle, made a promise: if there came a point when treatment was no longer working, she wanted enough time to help Angelina do something incredible.

There would be seven and a half years of treatment, but also huge birthday parties, Disney trips, cruises, indoor skydiving, swimming with sea turtles, and ziplining in Hawaii.

Danielle was determined that cancer would never be the only thing that defined Angelina’s life.

What got me thinking about this was the conversation I had with David Ferrugio this week on the podcast. David was 12 when he lost his dad in the September 11th attacks. We talk about things so unimaginable we can’t even process that they’ve actually happened. Even when we know firsthand that they have.

For David Ferrugio, it was the day his dad died.

We remember it as a national tragedy. David has spent 25 years living with it as a personal loss.

We all lost something that day. But some people lost someone.

David knew he had lost his father. He also knew he didn’t want to lose his own life to that loss.

But knowing you want to keep living and figuring out how to do it are two different things. It doesn’t happen overnight.

Twenty-five years ago, David Ferrugio lost his father on 9/11. He was just 12 years old.

While we all lost something that day, some people really lost someone.

Twenty-five years later, David is the the host DEAD Talks | Death, Grief & Afterlife Podcast a new author (You’re Not Dead Yet: How Grief and Loss Can Teach You How to Live) and still processing and finding his way through his loss.

I’m so grateful he came on the show. Our losses are different, but there was so much we understood about each other. This conversation holds both humor and sadness, and I promise you, it’s worth listening to.
