This summer, our Donor documentary has taken us across the country — from Orlando, FL; Hershey, PA; Philadelphia; Augusta, GA; Atlanta, GA; Savannah, GA; Bend, OR; Seattle, WA; Portland, OR — and now to Washington, D.C., where we are filming interviews inside the historic Watergate building.
Yesterday’s filming at the Watergate building gave us not only a great view but also a fantastic setup to experiment with lighting. I used the Nanlite Forza 500B II as my key light, the Nanlite PavoSlim 120B as my backlight, and rotated fill lights depending on the setup — sometimes the Forza 300B II, sometimes the PavoTube 30C.
Today we traveled to Charlottesville to film at the University of Virginia School of Law. Once again, the windows played a major role — the natural light and the view from the conference room provided a perfect backdrop for our interview.
On the camera side, the Canon C400 and C80, paired with Xeen prime lenses and Canon’s superb 24–105 mm f/2.8 and 15–35 mm f/2.8 zoom lenses, delivered once again. Their flexibility made achieving the right look and exposure relatively easy, even across a wide range of lighting conditions. Over 60 interviews filmed, and not a single overheating issue. Features like triple ISO and internal ND filters continue to be game changers on the road.
About the project:
Nate Dorn walked into a clinic at age 19 and donated s***m for extra cash, being told it would be used for 20 families and then retired. Now, more than thirty years later, he is the biological father to over 85 donor-conceived children. His eldest offspring, Kianni, grew up with two stepbrothers — but when their family changed, she lost them, which led her to seek out her donor siblings. Today, she has assembled a community of more than 80 siblings (and counting), all brought together by her determination and the clinic’s failure to retire Nate’s sample. This human story explores what drives Kianni in her quest to connect, how these found families thrive, and what it says about the modern fertility industry.
