The Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) announced a new Homeowner Education and Protection Program to help residents understand their responsibilities for water and sewer service lines on their property.

🔎 What homeowners should know:
• Repairs to water and sewer service lines on your property are your responsibility
• These repairs are often not covered by basic homeowners insurance
• Emergencies can be costly and unexpected

🛠️ What’s new:
SCWA has partnered with HomeServe to offer optional protection plans that can help cover repair costs and connect homeowners with local contractors if a service line breaks.

✅ The program is completely voluntary
✅ No public funds are used
✅ No change to your water service if you don’t enroll

🚨 Major Development Proposal in Islandia — County Says NO 🚨

On January 7, 2026, the Suffolk County Planning Commission issued a staff recommendation to DISAPPROVE a proposed zoning change and large mixed-use development at the corner of Veterans Memorial Highway & Motor Parkway in the Village of Islandia.

📌 What’s being proposed?
• Up to 416 apartments + hotel units (only 50 hotel rooms, mostly rentals)
• 5-story buildings up to 80 feet tall
• Over 630,000 sq ft of development
• 809 parking spaces
• Built on one of the last large wooded parcels in the area

📉 Why the County says NO:
• ❌ Violates the intent of “Main Street” zoning — this location is car-dependent, not walkable
• ❌ Too dense for the site — far more housing than current zoning allows
• ❌ No meaningful public benefit (no extra workforce housing, transit access, or pedestrian amenities)
• ❌ Traffic impacts not adequately addressed
• ❌ Environmental concerns, including loss of wooded land and potential bat habitat
• ❌ Does not support a pedestrian-friendly community (Walk Score: 32/100)

🛑 Bottom line:
The County found this proposal would change the character of the area, set a dangerous precedent, and can already be developed under existing zoning without these changes.

This is a big decision that affects traffic, housing, environment, and community character. Residents should pay attention and speak up.
