The son burst back into the hospital room.
The bed was empty.
The blanket had been folded neatly.
Only a white envelope remained on the table beside a freshly signed document.
His hands shook as he grabbed it.
Down the hallway, an elevator door slid open.
An elderly caregiver was gently pushing his mother’s wheelchair inside.
His mother never looked back.
“Mom, wait!”
The lawyer’s words echoed in his head:

He tore open the envelope.
Inside was a signed transfer document.
At the bottom, a single name had already been filled in.

The caregiver’s.
His face drained of color.
The elevator doors began to close.
For the first time, his mother turned slightly toward him.
Her voice was calm.
**“He remembered who stayed.”**
The doors slid shut.
