Paul writes, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). If people need to hear the gospel to believe, then gospel proclamation isn't merely helpful. This Thursday, The Good Doctrine begins a new series on one of the most foundational subjects in Christian theology: the Doctrine of Revelation.

Christians agree that God has revealed himself. But some of the questions surrounding that revelation are surprisingly controversial:

Can someone be saved without hearing the gospel?
How were people saved before Christ?
Can reason, science, or history correct Scripture?
Did the Church give us the Bible?
Does God still reveal himself in special ways today?

For Episode 13, we’re going to do something similar to When Christians Disagree, How Do We Decide Who’s Right? We’ll take some of the biggest questions Christians disagree about, consider the strongest arguments on competing sides, weigh the evidence, and come to a conclusion.

The word “Trinity” isn’t in the Bible.

Neither is homoousios. Neither is the phrase “one essence, three persons.” So did Christians invent the doctrine of the Trinity centuries after the apostles? Or did the Church develop increasingly precise language to describe what Scripture had taught all along?

Does Christian doctrine change? The apostles never used words like Trinity, homoousios, or “subsistent relations.” Yet over the centuries, Christians developed increasingly precise language to explain who God is.

So did Christianity itself change?

In Episode 12 of The Good Doctrine, we trace nearly 1,200 years of Trinitarian development—from the Gospel of John and the early Logos theologians to Tertullian, Origen, Nicaea, the Cappadocians, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas.

Along the way, we ask:

What’s the difference between doctrinal change and doctrinal development?
Why did Nicaea say the Son is “begotten, not made”?
Why did Christians adopt the non-biblical word homoousios?
How can Father, Son, and Spirit be genuinely distinct without becoming three Gods?
And what in the world did Aquinas mean by “subsistent relations”?

The central argument:

The apostolic revelation doesn’t change. The truth doesn’t change. But the Church’s understanding, conceptual distinctions, and vocabulary can genuinely develop as Christians reason from Scripture and respond to new questions and errors.
