We need your help! There is a significant lack of national MMIR data concerning in-custody homicides of Native people. Unfortunately, the Department of Corrections has been unwilling to share information unless specific details are already provided.

Obtaining public information about Native deaths by law enforcement is also incredibly challenging, particularly for incidents that occurred more than a few years ago. Based on the information we have gathered and compared with data from other national tracking organizations, we know that Native people in Colorado are killed at five times the rate of white people on a per capita basis. This rate is higher than any other demographic, and we are aware that we still do not have a complete list of names.

We need the community to speak up and help us demand accountability.

This is an uncomfortable conversation we need to have.
We all need to make a stand about having known abusers and s*x offenders in positions of honor or sitting at drums at our pow wows. Almost every single woman on every MMIR list nationally has experienced domestic violence, s*xual assault, or trafficking prior to going missing or being killed. We have to be proactive in protecting our women and children and not just reactive when we have to search for them. Make pow wows and ceremony safe spaces for survivors and stop centering perpetrators. Normalize telling our men to get help.

In this episode, I share a personal story of my daughter’s ceremony at Oak Flat, reflect on what it means to our people, and speak on what’s at stake for my niece Lozen, whose ceremony may be blocked if the land is taken.
We break down the May 7th ruling, that halted the land transfer, May 27th decision, and look ahead to the June 6th court hearing in Phoenix that could shape the future of Oak Flat.
This isn’t just about land, it’s about our ceremonies, our ancestors, and our survival.

You can't look the other way when your friends or relatives are abusers and still claim to support MMIR work. Believe survivors
