It’s October 1st, and this time of year I’m always asked for recommendations for horror so I guess I will give one a day until Halloween 🎃. Some will be classics, some will be obscure. Let’s start it off somewhere in the middle, with a personal favorite - MadMan.
MadMan is partially based off the urban legend of Cropsy, but was altered because of a similar film The Burning. It takes place at a camp in the north east, and can at times seem like a standard paint-by-numbers slasher. And while some might seem like a negative, what it really means is you are getting exactly what you signed up for. It’s not boring or predictable, but being a slasher you have a general idea of what could happen.
It stars Gaylen Ross from Dawn of the Dead and Creepshow, in her only other acting role before she became a director. The kills are unique, the effects are good, and the makeup of the killer MadMan Marz is interesting. The music is memorable with an acoustic song detailing Madman Marz.
And best of all, this gem is up for streaming on Amazon, Freevee, Tubi and PlutoTV for free. So you can start off the season right.
Or you can be a cool kid like me and watch the recent 4K Blu-Ray restoration put out by Vinegar Syndrome. (Or i can figure out where I put my bootleg VHS).
