There’s just one day left in our Wings + Wonder + Water crowdfunding campaign! In celebration of making it to the very end, we’re so excited to spotlight our final contributing photographer from the project: Taly Glez.

Originally from Mexico City, Taly was given a box camera as a child, kindling an exploration of his world that matured into a deep passion for wildlife photography, which he greatly enjoys perfecting through his gorgeous work with the birds and wildlife at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve.

His work has a delicacy and sensitivity that eludes many more seasoned professionals.

“Taly Glez is a master of bird portraiture; the dream-like quality of his images conveys the elegance and poise of birds in moments of stillness and silence,” says Wings + Wonder + Water author Amanda Thompson.

His superb portraits immediately convey Taly’s gift for capturing the most subtle and emotive expressions in his subjects. His work rounds out the unique variety of photographers showcased in the book.

We are thrilled to feature Taly’s work in Wings + Wonder + Water and we’re sure you’ll appreciate how special his work is. We hope that this publication of his work is but the first of many open doors and opportunities for Taly’s vision and talent to be recognized.

We may have reached our goal early, but this campaign is far from over yet! Today we’d like to spotlight another one of our talented contributing photographers: Nurit Katz—an educator and sustainability professional who is passionate about urban ecology and wildlife photography.

Nurit is the Outreach Coordinator for the Los Angeles Raptor Study, a citizen science based study of urban raptors, and serves on the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Areas Steering Committee and the board of LA Wild. Having grown up in the San Fernando Valley, Nurit is a local through and through, and considers the Reserve like her second home—“a source of joy and solace” for her.

Though Nurit considers herself an amateur photographer, her passion for the craft and artistic work is far from it. She loves sharing the delight of nature with others through her work, which she says helps them to see the natural beauty present all around us in the city. Professionally, her accolades are many: she holds both an MBA and Masters in Public Policy, and in 2022 was appointed by the Mayor to serve as Commissioner on the Board of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

“Nurit Katz’s delicate details reveal a great fondness for her subjects and attest to her keen powers of observation and calm demeanor—both necessary to witness and capture her subject’s relaxed, natural behavior,” says Wings + Wonder + Water author Amanda Thompson.

Prior to Wings + Wonder + Water, Nurit’s work had been primarily published through UCLA, where she serves as the university’s first Chief Sustainability Officer, an instructor for the UCLA Extension Sustainability Certificate Program, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Spotlight on Melissa Teller—Her passion for photography began in 1999 with a UCLA extension class that she took at night while still working as a lawyer. Soon thereafter, Melissa relocated to New York City and spent the next six years focusing on photography. Birds are now Melissa’s most beloved and most frequent subject.

“The fleeting and fascinating behavior Melissa Teller documents through endless hours in the field result in one-of-a-kind images any wildlife photographer would envy,” says fellow photographer and Wings + Wonder + Water author Amanda Thompson.

The Sepulveda Wildlife Basin is one of Melissa’s favorite local spots to photograph birds. When she is not behind the camera, she can often be found on the tennis court or at a local park with her mini goldendoodle Marley.

Spotlight on Andy House—a photographer who formalized his study of photography at Santa Monica College. His first serious photography project was inspired by the writings of Rudyard Kipling. He has gone around the world multiple times, taking photographs in India, Bhutan, Borneo, and most of the countries in southeast Asia.

“Andy House is drawn to the athletic, muscular qualities of birds in flight, as seen in the bold action and dynamism of his photos,” says Wings + Wonder + Water author Amanda Thompson.

Watching birds in flight is something Andy has enjoyed since childhood. Growing up, he loved watching the hawks circling over his family’s Mandeville Canyon home and watching the amazing aerobatics performed by the seagulls and pelicans while he was surfing in Malibu. He's had dreams of unaided flight, the way Peter Pan flies, since he was a boy. So, once he became serious about photography it was inevitable that sooner or later, he would be attracted to the challenges of capturing birds in flight with his camera.

Andy’s images are some of the most flight-forward in the book—each one seemingly more majestic than the last. Flip through to see some of our favorites of his inclusions, and be sure not to miss the only stitched together image in the entire collection, showcasing the progression of a juvenile Red-Tail Hawk from perch to airborne.

Serendipity has wings. This week marks the halfway point in our campaign—and by chance (or perhaps kismet) it was punctuated by a major milestone: reaching 50% of our funding goal.

Spotlight on Bonnie Blake—a photographer who fuses artistic imagination and concerns about environmental threats from climate change to create photographs that provoke and delight. She is based in Los Angeles with roots in Louisville, Kentucky and New York City.

Bonnie has studied still photography with Fran Antmann in New York City and with Just Loomis, Cig Harvey and Aline Smithson at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, and her career as a camera operator in Hollywood has undoubtedly influenced her work.

“Bonnie Blake’s misty landscapes and voyeuristic peeks through tangled vines and lush greenery distill the moods and tones of moments at the Reserve, delivering a graceful and cinematic ambiance to the book,” says Wings + Wonder + Water author Amanda Thompson.

In fact, in the early days of the pandemic, Amanda and Bonnie explored the Reserve together and began photographing the magnificent birds living there—a slice of solace in an urban wilderness entirely apart from the stifling lockdown felt around the world. And the Wings + Wonder + Water project was born!

Spotlight on Amanda Thompson—a photographer and writer focusing on nature, wildlife, conservation, and the magnificence of our planet. Her photography has been published by the BBC and has been featured in Los Angeles area gallery shows.

Amanda unknowingly drove by the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve for years before discovering the majesty of the birdlife living and passing through this urban wildlife oasis. This revelation was the spark that inspired Wings + Wonder + Water. By showcasing a selection of birds who live and migrate through Los Angeles’ Sepulveda Basin, Amanda hopes to help people discover and support the birds and wildlife living in their own backyards, and provide inspiration for how we can all engage with our urban environments to support the livelihood of our human and animal neighbors all around the world. The book includes over 160 gallery-quality images captured through the eyes of six local nature and wildlife photographers.

What an amazing first day! We ended yesterday at nearly 25% funded, which is an amazing start and we are so grateful. We launched this little-Kickstarter-that-could with a humble goal of offsetting the cost of high quality, environmentally conscious printing for our beautiful nature and wildlife photography book…

We never dreamed we’d hit 24% of our funding goal so quickly.
