The sample image above is optimized on the top half to look most attractive on screen, while the lower half of the image is optimized to print on newsprint. Newsprint has a brightness rating of only 57. Many copier grade papers are rated 90 or more, and a monitor screen is even higher! To achieve best print results, we've pumped up both the brightness and contrast of the image by about a third. Every image is unique, but a good rule of thumb is that when sampled, the image should have 0% ink in areas of highlight and 100% black in areas of shadow. Remember: With newsprint 100% black prints as a dark charcoal gray.

Bonus tip: Oftentimes we see black and white images submitted in RGB mode. These should be submitted (and adjusted) in grayscale mode. Simply using the image>adjust>black and white command in Photoshop is not adequate (although doing that before image>mode>grayscale will grant you more control over the conversion).
