Traveling While Black
Named one of the top six most significant VR works at this year’s Sundance Film Festival by CoolHunting, Traveling While Black is a 360 video experience directed by Roger Ross Williams, the first African American director to win an Academy Award. Confronting the way we understand and talk about race in America, this virtual reality documentary immerses the viewer in the long history of restriction of movement for black Americans and the creation of safe spaces in our communities.

In this 20-minute, 360-degree virtual reality experience, viewers sit with African American visitors at the famed Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C. as they share a moment of honest discussion, reflecting on their experiences of restricted movement and race relations in the U.S.

Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams’ finely crafted film highlights the urgent need to remember this past, build critical empathy, and facilitate a dialogue about the challenges minority travelers still face today.

The stories told in Traveling While Black offers a multi-generational experience that can be shared by all. After the VR experience, participants had the opportunity to gather in the lobby to reflect and respond. Please be aware that some of the stories shared include difficult images, language, and slurs experienced by the storytellers.

Participants wore Oculus ( Oculus Quest 2 ) virtual reality headsets that were cleaned and disinfected between each show.
Not recommended for children under age 13.

Traveling While Black is a Felix & Paul Studios production, distributed by PHI.

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) VR
Career and Technical Education program

This project is a collaboration between Seattle Public Schools and SIXR, Simulated Immersive eXperimental Realities, a Seattle based 501(c)3 non-profit focused on community and collaborative productivity of VR/AR and 360 video experiences. The project will be expanded with high school programs to offer Intro to Immersive Media class and add a Launch206 experience that deepens the relationship with Industry partners such as Unity Education, Microsoft, and Oculus. The program will include a credit-bearing summer experience, as well as student support so that they can engage in sufficient learning to earn the Unity Certified User certificate through an SPS supported exam opportunity. SIXR internships are based on student learners completing the Immersive Media curriculum. This will allow students to continue a career preparation and launch a trajectory towards careers in the growing VR/AR/XR field.

Future Founders - Makers Fellowship
Project: Design for Manufacturing - the Future of Electric Passenger Water Transportation

During this challenging time, MMRTI, SIXR, and ChickTech Seattle have identified an opportunity to train marginalized BIPOC young adults to not only participate, but also become future leaders in technology. The Future Founders Makers Fellowship is a paid 8-week training, networking, and hands-on experience in product design, mentorship, and tech entrepreneurship. The inaugural cohort is open to all Central and South Seattle residents ages 18 to 24 years-old who have demonstrated interest in technology and targets Black and Latinx women, as well as recent immigrants. The expected outcome is for youth to gain industry-recognized certifications, to have digital 3D product design portfolios, and when time permits, to showcase physical floating prototypes of electric passenger water transportation at Seattle’s South Lake Union.

Give Big to Immersive Media Education Programs by SIXR

Seattle, WA - May 5, 2020 – SIXR: Simulated Immersive eXperimental Realities is responding to meet the needs of our students from under-represented communities by raising funds for XR laptops and Oculus Quest HMD’s.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec 1, 2020 #GivingTuesday – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.The day is designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.

At a time when we are all experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings people of all races, faiths, and political views together across the globe. Generosity gives everyone power to make a positive change in the lives of others and is a fundamental value anyone can act on. It’s a day for everyone around the world to stand together and give back in all ways, no matter who or where we are.

SIXR: Simulated Immersive eXperimental Realities IS PARTICIPATING IN #GivingTuesdayNow, to raise funds for laptops and VR headsets because we have had to shift all our classes online, and our students can’t participate remotely without these tools.
SIXR Executive Director, Diana Fairbank says, “We have been nimble enough to shift all of our current programs online, but we need to acquire laptops and headsets to loan to students who have no other access. We are thrilled
#GivingTuesdayNow is happening to address the shifting needs of nonprofits during this COVID19 crisis”.

People can show their generosity in a variety of ways during #GivingTuesdayNow, whether it’s helping a neighbor, advocating for an issue, sharing a skill, or giving to causes, every act of generosity counts. The global movement will emphasize opportunities to give back to communities and causes in safe ways that allow for social connection even while practicing physical distancing.

“As a global community, we can mourn this moment of extreme crisis while also finding the opportunity to support one another. We each have the power to make an impact with acts of generosity, no matter how small, and to ensure the sustainability of organizations and services that are crucial to the care and support of our communities,” said Asha Curran, CEO of GivingTuesday. “#GivingTuesdayNow is a chance for us to stand united and use grassroots generosity to show that we are all in this together, beginning to end. Even as many face financial uncertainty, generosity is not about size. From calling an elderly neighbor to chat to offering translation help; from showing gratitude to our healthcare workers to donating to your local food bank, every act of kindness is a beacon of hope in this crisis. We all have something to give, and every act of human consideration and kindness matters.”

About GivingTuesday
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past eight years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give. GivingTuesday strives to build a world in which the catalytic power of generosity is at the heart of the society we build together, unlocking dignity, opportunity and equity around the globe.

#GivingTuesdayNow is organized by GivingTuesday, in partnership with its global network of leaders, partners, communities and generous individuals. GivingTuesday is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

PS: GivingTuesday on December 1, 2020 is *still happening!* We’re not “moving GivingTuesday earlier,” it’s that “the world is getting an additional GivingTuesday.”

Google to provide computers, internet to California students studying from home

#ed4all
[San Francisco Chronicle] - Google will provide thousands of computers and free internet access to help California students finish the school year online, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday.
The company plans to donate 4,000 Chromebooks and make broadband internet available to 100,000 households through the end of the school year. Newsom said at a news conference that “Google stepped up in a big way,” but that more support was needed from the private sector to reach the most remote parts of the state.

California is expecting schools to remain closed for the rest of the year. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Google will provide thousands of computers and free internet access to help students finish the year online.

In order to narrow the digital literacy gap and to secure the community's futures and pull them out of poverty, they need to be able to compete in the growing economic segments of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Our mission is to empower these communities with access to resources to break the cycle of exploitation among the most vulnerable.

Hi everyone! I would like to share this free webinar with you guys! It's on HTC Vive SDKs and how to incorporate them into your workflows. Register here to attend: http://bit.ly/2XyjQ7Y
Hey SIXR Fam, As I know everyone in this org is up on all things VR + Video, I wanted to send a shout out to anyone who is looking to get into the MR space, as my team is currently looking for a paid intern to support our video efforts:
Hey folks, quick ask, might be relevant to others as well. Does anyone know where to find free (or licensed for non-commercial applications) 360 pano images for VR? Like HDRIs, but of clearly virtual, cg, and/or fantasy settings? Searching for backgrounds for a VR app, I've found most of the available options are real-world photography skyboxes. But for this particular application, having a slightly science-fiction or vaporwave waiting room of some kind would be much more appropriate.
I'm working on VR Printmaking with tactility.
