Before Stone and Jeff went on to form Pearl Jam, there was Mother Love Bone.

Coalesced from the remnants of 3 seminal Northwest bands, Mother Love Bone developed a completely unique amalgam of sounds and textures. Through their recordings and live gigs, Mother Love Bone transcended the typical rock show with energetic exhibitions of musical spirit that balance between reality and parody, entertaining, teasing, and challenging their audience all at the same time.

35+ years following their original releases, newly remastered editions of Shine EP (1989) and Apple (1990) are available to listen and preorder today in celebration of the music’s enduring impact. Preorder: https://motherlovebone.lnk.to/apple-and-shine - for myself, still own the original vinyl of “Shine” and all the CD’s (including singles). Luckily, I’ve been able to hang onto what’s important to me.

It’s been a minute (or 10) since I’ve shared a magazine article. It’s also been a couple years since I last shared it.

This a collaborative effort between U.K..’s Mojo & Q magazines - December 2005, “Junk Mail”.

Snippet: ON 10 APRIL 1996, the band played an MTV Unplugged show at Brooklyn Academy Of Music’s Majestic Theatre in New York. Staley, looking frail but in good spirits, seemed to loosen up after a few songs, removing his sunglasses and announcing ”Now we’re going to break to an LL Cool J video.” Inez responded by firing off the opening bars to Metallica’s Enter Sandman.
The acoustic set was the perfect showcase for Staley’s harrowed power, and the horsing around between songs proved that Alice In Chains had lost none of their dry wit. “I would have to say that this is the best show we’ve done in three years,” Staley informed the 400-strong crowd towards the end of the set. “This is the only show we’ve done in three years,” aid Kinney. “Well,” the singer replied. “It’s still the best.”

Here’s the oversized thick board tag I created for Paul (sharing from his stories).

I have always loved his work, especially imagining what he saw in those early days for a then “unsigned” band. Creating something on a mixed media platform while still keeping the rail yard as the theme was challenging, yet something I wanted to do for Paul.

I think about how often photographers are never acknowledged for their work, their vision; and many people never know that the images you see in the magazines was Paul’s. If you weren’t aware, Paul was the first photographer to ever photograph Alice In Chains; thanks in part by Randy Hauser (d. May 9, 2024).

Without getting sidetracked, the oversized tag consisted of metal embellishments, the original images of Paul’s, edited street signs, a long sought after train caboose image, specific backgrounds and a lot of time & patience.

Although an oversized tag like Paul’s was one of a kind, I am currently finishing up quite a few brand new oversized tags. Along with the oversized tags, I have a lot of handmade smaller tags that will be available at the tribute too.

I look forward to seeing everyone there!

For those of you who like to collect anything & everything AiC (like me). These are all fax correspondence between different parties (Management & promoters, etc). The shows they’re discussing were in February 1993, when Alice was in Europe and Screaming Trees opened.

Flashback to my 24 year old self. Upon packing I went through MANY photo albums, I didn’t want to leave any of them behind.

Photos can remind you of happier times and also remind you of some not so happy ones. Some of the people I celebrated my birthdays with back then have passed away. Therefore, they hold a special place in my memory.

The two guys in this photo? I couldn’t tell you who they were. I probably knew at the time though. Me & my friends all hung out at the same bars so we got to be “regulars”.

On this day in 2015, the book “Alice in Chains; the Untold Story” was released.

Ten years of marking, highlighting and sharing this book with many of you. This book was very well researched, well written, with countless hours of interviewing, editing, and flying to Seattle no less than 6 times. All done by a very young and talented writer in grad school. I’m honored that he and I have continued our friendship for well over a decade.

The author is David de Sola. Yesterday I had a chance to check in with him and also discuss the book and its success. This is what I had planned to share today. HOWEVER, for some reason the sound did not work for me to share. Therefore, David & I will be chatting again via Zoom and I’ll share that with you. You don’t want to miss this.

Congratulations David on a great book and 10 years of bringing new “Chainers” into the community!
