One Ocean Expedition is nearing the finish line, just a few days from sailing into Victoria, BC on August 9 and Anacortes, WA on August 11. Over the course of their journey they’ve sailed more than 27,000 nautical miles through some of the world’s most remote, challenging, and beautiful waters.

Their lead scientist wrote an article reflecting on the expedition’s findings, comparing current data to their 2009/2010 expedition. It’s an important read for understanding how deeply we impact the oceans we sailors love so much. It can be disheartening to see how dramatic that impact is, but it’s also a reminder that we have the power to make changes that protect the ocean, the earth, and all animals.

🌊 This month we made our donation to Ocean Conservancy as part of our commitment to give 1% of our profits to ocean causes.

They’re running a dollar-for-dollar match right now, so your gift goes twice as far. National Ocean Month is almost over, so if you’ve been thinking about donating, now is the time.

A photo of the beautiful SV Arbella, a Skye 51. Tucker and Catherine of Salty Coffee Sailing Expeditions lead their offshore expeditions aboard this stunning boat. They have already logged more than 15,000 nautical miles across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and you can join them on their upcoming passages from Mexico, April 4–10, 2026, and Miami to Bermuda, April 29–May 9, 2026.

Their expeditions are built around real offshore experience, careful passage planning, and time at sea that actually teaches you something.

What makes this especially exciting for us is that they use a Backstay Logbook during their expeditions.

Congratulations to the crew of One Ocean Expedition on rounding Cape Horn from east to west.

For many sailors, Cape Horn is the ultimate milestone. Cold water, powerful currents, and some of the wildest weather in the world have earned it a reputation that few places at sea can match.

The One Ocean crew has spent the last ten months sailing more than 16,000 nautical miles around the Americas. Along the way they have been keeping their records in the Backstay One Ocean Logbook.

It is always special to see a logbook travel the same waters it was designed for.

Safe sailing north.

Congratulations to Gio and Julie from Pelagic Blue Cruising on making landfall in the Galápagos after 20 days and more than 2,000 miles at sea from Puerto Vallarta.

Julie and Gio are the authors behind the Backstay Offshore Logbook and co-authors of the Maintenance Logbooks, and there’s no better proof of concept than seeing them put to use on a passage like this.

Gio and Julie are also leading a Vancouver Island Circumnavigation Flotilla this summer. There is still time to join them. Learn more: https://www.pelagicbluecruising.com/flotillas

GPS trouble in the Caribbean has many cruisers on alert. The best backup is a clean, hourly log with your latitude, longitude, course, and speed. Check out Sailing Totem’s recent article to learn more about safe passage making.

If you want a simple way to keep those details organized on passage, the Backstay Offshore Logbook is built for 24 hour sailing and makes position tracking easy and consistent.
