“Not Another Mexican Restaurant!” … and Other Ways We Sabotage Our Own Dining Scene

Midland-Odessa, we need to talk.

You say you want more locally owned restaurants. You say we’re tired of the same national chains. You say “support local” like it’s a badge of honor. Trust us, we get those comments almost every time we post about the national brands.

But here’s the pattern:
1️⃣ A new place opens.
2️⃣ They’re still getting their feet under them.
3️⃣ Social media pounces: negative reviews, public pile-ons, and helpful comments like, “Not worth it” or “We won’t be back.”
4️⃣ The place closes.
5️⃣ Repeat.

Cattle Dog Tavern? Gone in a flash. And now, before Capricho’s Bar & Mexican Vibes has even unlocked the doors, we’ve already got people rolling their eyes saying “Not another Mexican restaurant.”

Really? We live in West Texas, where Mexican food is basically a love language, and somehow this is the hill some want to die on?

Here’s the truth: starting a restaurant is one of the hardest business moves out there. The median lifespan for an independent spot is about 4 years. Only half make it to year five. And those numbers aren’t just “out there”, they’re right here.

So if you truly want to “support local,” maybe you could:

• Wait until they open before deciding we don’t like them.
• Give them time to work out the kinks.
• Share feedback in person instead of as a public hit job.

Otherwise, let’s be honest and change the slogan from “Support Local” to “Support Local… But Only If They Read Our Minds, Never Make a Mistake, and Serve Exactly What We Want from Day One.”
