Some fantastic news about the future of Folk-Legacy's catalog:

We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of Folk-Legacy Records, major players in the flourishing 60s folk revival.

As musicians themselves, Folk-Legacy’s founders sought out “people’s music”: passed from generation to generation within a community, as a means of connection, entertainment, honest expression of personal values, and a source of solace and resilience through social and political struggles. These 140+ albums range widely in traditions, from gospel and hymns of Appalachia and the Ozarks to sea shanties of the British Isles; from dance tunes of New Brunswick to Southwestern American folktales, story-songs, and children’s music.

To celebrate Folk-Legacy becoming a part of our label family, today we're releasing "A Living Tradition: Selections from Folk-Legacy Records," with iconic songs by old-time banjo player Frank Proffitt, singer-songwriter Gordon Bok, folk revivalist Hedy West, and more.

Thanks, Gordon.

Our hearts and deepest sympathy go out to the Paton family for the passing of Caroline Paton, co-founder and manager of the legendary Folk-Legacy Records. Without Sandy and Caroline pioneering perhaps the only recording company devoted solely to folk music we wouldn't have the rich repertoire of folk artists today. Sandy passed away many years ago; we lost Caroline just a few days ago. Hundreds of folk musicians, including Gordon Bok, are deeply grateful for the Patons and their lifetime love of folk music.

The Folk-Legacy Song
Written by David Paton for Sandy & Caroline Paton's 50th wedding anniversary

There once was a young man who played the guitar
He traveled and sang both near and far
And he met a young woman who sang harmony
And this is their legacy..

Chorus:
Fifty long years, half a century
They took great delight in their good company
And always found time for their family
And this is their legacy

In England and Scotland they traveled around
Collecting good ballads wherever they're found
Then back to New England where they settled down
And this is their legacy...

Now as older they're growing and time goes along
Good friends and grandchildren around them throng
And still they find time for to sing them a song
And this is their legacy...

This is their folk-legacy.

Please join us in celebrating Caroline's 86th birthday and 58 years of traditional folk music and song from Folk-Legacy at the Folk-Legacy Weekend September 14th, 15th, and 16th in Sharon, CT.

Many of you local folks are aware that every November I host an afternoon we call Working on the Water. This year will be our ninth gathering of mariners. If you haven't been, please consider coming to the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum Nov 10 at 1:00 pm to hear sea stories, maybe some poetry, and a song or two from people who've made their living on working on the water. We're still assembling our participants, so if any of you are interested in sharing your experiences please give Kathy a call or send her an email at the Timberhead office. It's a fun time, for both participants and audience, and you get a lovely tour of the museum too.

FOLK RECORD COMPANY CAPTURES SOUND NEAR AND FAR

#ThrowbackThursday "In looking ahead to the next 20 years, the Patons are optimistic. They title their current catalogue ''A Musical Survival Kit for the 1980's.'' Much of their market, said Mr. Paton, consists of people who ''are looking to us to provide material they can learn and do themselves''; a fortunate circumstance, he noted, at a time when the economy is forcing more people to create their own entertainment at home.

Mrs. Paton said she hopes there continue to be people who ''look upon us as an essential in their life, not a frill. We want to keep on doing what we're doing - we love it.''

SHARON WHEN the Library of Congress started doing documentary field recordings of traditional folk singers in the Depression years of the 1930's, Sandy and Caroline Paton were children. While growing up, those records were ''great sources of songs and knowledge about the tradition for us,'' said Mr....

Real Contemporary Folk Music – A Living Tradition

A great review of Larry Kaplan's new Folk Legacy album, "Furthermore," in No Depression: "This is living, breathing folk music from the heart to the hearts of the listener, shared as it was meant to be shared. The songs here are thoughtfully crafted, performed skillfully and with honest feeling by Larry and his immensely talented friends. There is history and humanity and depth here just waiting to be heard."

We each hear old sayings throughout our lives from previous generations.  Too often we shrug them off without giving them a second thought, but as we age ourselves – and, hopefully, grow somewhat wiser, we recognize the truth in them.  Two of these sayings that come immediately to mind when I think…
