Unfaithful, directed by Adrian Lyne, is a psychological erotic thriller that explores the consequences of infidelity and the fragile nature of marriage. The film stars Diane Lane as Connie Sumner, Richard Gere as her husband Edward, and Olivier Martinez as Paul Martel, Connie's lover.
Set in the suburbs of New York City, the story begins with Connie and Edward living a seemingly happy and stable life with their young son. Their marriage, while comfortable, has grown routine. One windy day in Manhattan, Connie literally bumps into Paul, a charming French bookseller. As Connie becomes increasingly entangled in the affair, she begins lying to Edward. Suspicious, Edward hires a private investigator, who eventually confirms his fears. The second half of the film delves into the psychological aftermath of the affair and the crime. Connie discovers what Edward has done but chooses to protect him. Their guilt and complicity bind them together in a new, twisted way, as they silently question whether they can live with what they've done.
Diane Lane received critical acclaim for her nuanced performance, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The film is notable for its moody cinematography, emotional tension, and haunting score.
