Factor This content director Paul Gerke is joined by Kat Burnham, senior principal at Advanced Energy United (AEU), in this article and video interview, to explain why the Trump administration's choice to revoke permissions for nearly finished New England offshore installation Revolution Wind is a net loss for the industry and for American energy independence. The cancelation of $679 million in federal funding for offshore wind, and the revocation of permits, comes at the same time that energy prices are continuing to rise, with AEU tracking an increase of 67% in the New England region from 2024 to 2025.

The past decade has been a period of major change for the energy industry. Power needs have not only grown but changed entirely as technological innovations reshape the terrain of the industry. The coming years will demand adaptable, dynamic, modern distribution infrastructure to match the fluidity and changing nature of power generation. AI in particular poses a unique challenge for the industry, as the energy demands of building AI at scale are immense, and AI use patterns do not follow the conventional day-night scheme of more classic consumer energy needs. Industry insiders are looking for scalable, adaptive energy control systems to meet the new moment.

08/27/2025

Energy industry regulators at the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) have voted unanimously to repeal a rule that required at least 15% of utility energy supplies to come from renewable sources by this year. While the rule's repeal comes at a time when federal and state governments are backing away from renewable energy, ACC chair Kevin Thompson rebuked claims that the repeal is politically motivated: "If renewables are truly the most affordable and reliable option, as we are frequently reminded by advocates, the generational technology should be able to prevail on its own without the need for mandates that have added millions of dollars in extra costs for ratepayers each year."
