NASA Science is moving closer to deploying nuclear reactors on the Moon, with plans to have them operational by 2030. While it may sound like science fiction, the concept has been part of the U.S. space program since the beginning, following earlier space-based nuclear technologies like radioisotope generators used in satellites, rovers, and the Voyager probes. Peaceful nuclear use in space is already permitted under international law, including the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and the UN’s 1992 Principles on Nuclear Power Sources in Outer Space.
