This piece, contributed by Marie-Louise Rees of Parker Hannifin, covers the transition from power engineering systems designed for steady-state operation to systems designed for continual change and flexibility. Rees details how renewable generation, energy storage, electrification, and the infrastructural buildout needed for AI systems, are driving the shift, and covers how industry stakeholders can respond.

Rapid development of new data centers across the United States is placing new stress on power generation and on the transmission grid. At this key moment, repeat contributor Brad Buecker is back, laying out the importance of on-line HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) and cogeneration water and steam chemistry monitoring, Buecker provides clarity around boiler and turbine reliability as all hands (and all generation types) are on deck to power this new technological revolution.

Even one failure can cost an owner millions of dollars in equipment repairs and lost production, and those costs are magnified if failures cause power disruptions at data centers.

Nextpower, formerly known as Nextracker, has crossed another milestone in its quest to become a one-stop shop for power plant design, deployment, optimization, and long-term operations: it has completed its previously announced acquisition of utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) company Prevalon Energy. The deal to fold in Prevalon, a U.S.-headquartered joint venture between Mitsubishi Power Americas and EES, was valued up to $365 million.

Independent power producer Cypress Creek Energy and Google are celebrating the start of construction on the first two phases of Steel River Energy Center, which will deliver 1.6 GWdc of new solar generation and 1.9 GWh of new battery storage to the local grid. Once fully complete, the three-phase project will provide 2.5GWdc of solar and 2.9 GWh of battery storage to the local grid system by 2029. It is the largest solar and storage project across Google's global portfolio to date.

In this top content from the past week, curated from the Associated Press, we see how renewable energy advocates are making the case for the use of renewables in powering data center infrastructure. In New York, legislators are even proposing to regulate the data center sector by requiring centers over a certain size to meet renewable energy benchmarks beginning in 2030, and to get at least 90% of their power from renewable sources by 2040.
