Gil Birmingham, of Comanche ancestry, was born in San Antonio, Texas. Growing up in a military family, he moved frequently and developed a love for music, mastering the guitar in his youth.

Though he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California and worked as a petrochemical engineer, fate had other plans โ€” a talent scout discovered him while bodybuilding in the early 1980s, leading to his first screen appearance in Diana Rossโ€™s 1982 music video โ€œMuscles.โ€

Birmingham soon dedicated himself fully to acting, studying under renowned coaches Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. He made his TV debut in 1986 with the series Riptide and later appeared in Body & Soul (2002) and Steven Spielbergโ€™s epic miniseries Into the West (2005). Audiences today know him best for roles like Billy Black in The Twilight Saga and the Texas Ranger in Hell or High Water, where he starred alongside Jeff Bridges.

With decades of diverse performances, Gil Birmingham continues to captivate audiences and honor his Native American heritage through every role he takes on.

Mama said, "THEREโ€™LL BE DAYS LIKE THIS." At the end of July 1915, Walter Dean Jr. photographed flood damage at Forsyth, Montana. In earlier decades the โ€œJune Riseโ€ had made steamboat travel possible on the Yellowstone River.

The derailment was along the Milwaukee Road tracks after flooding destroyed 600 feet of track. Smoke appeared to be raising, presumably from derailed cars that were burning behind the locomotive. The Montana Historical Society identified the barefoot lad as Walter Dean III. Forsyth is 45 miles west of Miles City in eastern Montana. Forsythโ€™s many historic buildings, particularly the courthouse, make a visit worthwhile. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin. WHITE ELEPHANT BAR, circa 1910 in Fallon (Montana), which was a Northern Pacific Railroad water stop 50 miles east of Miles City. Two signs promoted Grain Belt Golden beer. A compressed gas cylinder to dispense draft beer was at the lower right. The hewn log saloon had a rear extension built from dimensional lumber.

One of the early meanings of "seeing the elephant" was seeking satisfaction in disreputable places. Later โ€œseeing pink elephantsโ€ would refer to drunken hallucinations. PC users can click to better see the classic photo by John Breum. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

FIRST THANKSGIVING ever photographed in my hometown, 1881. Renowned Old West photographer L.A. Huffman captured the view in Miles City, Montana. The town was founded in 1877 after Col. Nelson A. Miles kicked out the sellers of alcohol from Fort Keogh. By 1881 Miles City had 41 saloons and nearly 1000 people. Men outnumbered women by 10 to 1. Before Custer County was divided in 1883, it had a land area larger than the state of Pennsylvania.

Huffman listed the location as E.H.M.C, which I am guessing was Miles Cityโ€™s European Hotel. The source image was an early stereoscope card. Text and digital cleaning and sharpening in Photoshop by Gary Coffrin.
