When Love Wasn’t Enough (The Return)
Episode 1
Could this be karma? Could this be the hand of life returning everything Nnamdi once did?
It had been three long years already, and the once intelligent, handsome, and promising young doctor everyone admired was now said to be mentally unstable.
They said it started slowly. At first, he would forget simple things, like where he dropped his stethoscope, or who he just spoke with a few minutes ago. Sometimes, he would laugh alone in the consulting room or talk to people who weren’t there. At first, the hospital management thought it was stress. After all, the workload was much, and Nnamdi had been working back-to-back shifts.
But as weeks went by, things got worse.
One morning during ward rounds, he suddenly started shouting at the patients, calling them ghøsts and demons. Everyone was shocked. His colleagues tried to calm him down, but he føught them off until they sedàted him.
After several medical tests, he was diagnosed with a severe mental disorder, one the doctors said might have been triggered by prolonged psychological stress and guilt trauma.
Because of that, Nnamdi was dismissed from duty at the hospital.
Sandra, his wife, couldn’t take it anymore.
She tried at first. She took him to several hospitals and prayer houses, but nothing changed. He would shout at night, laugh uncontrollably, and sometimes destroy things around the house. It became too much for her.
One morning, Sandra packed her things quietly, took their two children, and disappeared. She didn’t even tell him. She just left.
When the hospital could no longer keep him, they arranged for him to be taken back to the village.
It was the most painful day for his mother, Mama Nnamdi.
She fell to the ground crying as she saw the vehicle stop in front of their compound and Nnamdi brought down like a màdman, his hair rough, eyes red, and his clothes dirty.
“Jesus! Nnamdi! My son, what happened to you?” she screamed.
Monica ran out too, shouting and crying, “Brother! Brother, can you hear me?
