Summer Highland Falls - Billy Joel

I was up (very) late last night solving some tech issues for the Kristhen Facebook Live show for Longwood Library this Sunday. While I was at it, I came up with this test video using a favorite by Billy Joel - Summer Highland Falls.
I hope you enjoy it!
My best to everyone in these trying times.

Thanks too to everyone who donated their time and talents and those who came out and supported our fundraising efforts.
I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to Amy Tuttle and Bob Westcott for their guidance.

A little Christmas cheer from Tru on keyboards.

It's Cyber Monday and time for some Christmas cheer. Here's a clip from 2 Worlds Studio from last year, Tru Doty warming up the keys before a recording session. He didn't know we were rolling, sometimes the best clips are off-the-cuff! Please feel free to comment!

Something I used to do for fun! This was a live show at the Tralf Theater in Buffalo about 4 years ago. I was mixing on a Behringer X32 Digital Console doing sound for a Genesis tribute band (Rael) from NJ, a most excellent group of musicians.

Colleen Farquhar was tracking alto & tenor sax solos at 2 Worlds Studio this week for the Pattersons current recording project. Her meticulous, energetic style playing really brought these songs to life. Colleen also played on and charted the entire six part horn section for this album. She's just made the move to full-time musician and is available for live or session work.

Dirt Floor - Recording & Production

Dirt Floor - Recording & Production

I don’t rant often, so indulge me.
It’s 99.9% rainbows and puppy dogs around here, but there are a few things that try my patience. ❤️This does NOT involve any current DF artists, and is merely an amalgamation of past experiences❤️
If i’m hired to do a job, then I’ll do it to the best of my ability, and won’t sacrifice the quality, especially if it bares the Dirt Floor name. If you’re looking for cheap, there are plenty of places who’ll give you cheap.
Recording and mixing aren’t one and the same. Recording is the process of, you guessed it, recording(also called tracking)
It’s gathering ingredients. Mixing is taking those ingredients to create the final product.
This requires a different set of ears. If we’re making an album, mixing happens once all ingredients have been added. If we’re making a 3 to 5 song album, then it’s possible to mix in a single day. If we’re making a full length album, then we’d mix over the course of two or three days, back to back, to maintain continuity. Because we work on a large-format mixing console, this is super important.
We don’t record and mix on the same day, so don’t wait until the last second to tell me you want to add parts on what would be a mixing day. This is why you have rough mixes, so these decisions can be made in advance of the mixing stage. All tracks should be ready to mix once we’ve officially wrapped the tracking process, at which point we sit for a few weeks, to see how everything comes together. Sometimes I’ll fix or add parts myself, on my own time.
When we’ve set a session time, I expect you at that time. 3 o’clock is not the same as 5 o’clock, and I’m not required to stay two hours later because of your tardiness.
I respect your time, so respect mine.
if you’ve hired me to produce and arrange, then let me do my job. The success rate is high, with the exception of a few whose projects I had to walk away from in order to keep my sanity. In 10 years, this has happened only a handful of times, but enough to mention here.
If you get in the way of our(my) process, I can’t guarantee the quality. If I can’t guarantee the quality, then it won’t bare my name.
If you came to DF to create some sort of masterpiece, but insist on playing an instrument(or many) that might drag the entire song down with it, then the game is over at that point.
I get it, you really want to play the guitar on this track, except for the glaring fact that you’re timing is poor and your finesse nonexistent. Put me in coach! This is why you hired me in the first place. Doing it the other way is like building a house with no foundation.
Why can’t I make you sound like your favorite band? Well, my job is to work with artists and bands who aren’t trying to be like anyone else, but i digress.
You love the Black Crowes, and want your album to have a ‘Southern Harmony and Musical Companion’ vibe. I can give you that easily, but there are a few things to consider. Sure, we can nail that sound for you, but if your budget allows for two days of time, then there are corners that need to be cut, and a sliding scale then applies. The Black Crowes had a quarter million dollar budget for that record, and you’ve got $3,000. George Drakoulias(Black Crowes producer) spent a week just getting the drum sounds alone! You see where I’m going with this?
Of course the fact that you are NOT the Black Crowes factors prominently here.
We can make a killer record with the allotted budget, but you need to be realistic man!
If you try to stuff 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag what do you get?
