Fire News

The Huntington Manor Fire Department was called to a fire in an apartment above Contratchos Unisex Salon about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday May 26, 2020 Firefighters arrived to fire showing from the second floor which destroyed the apartments, the business suffered smoke and water damage. Suffolk County Police rescued five people from the building, one from inside the building and four from the roof. The fire was brought under control in about an hour. The five people were taken to Huntington Hospital by the Huntington Community First Aid Squad for evaluation. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Huntington and Greenlawn Fire Departments assisted at the scene. #huntingtonmanorfiredepartment @zone2photo

House fire in Wading River, Friday May 22, 2020.
A house in Wading River, at the corner of Farm Road West and Farm Road South, was heavily damaged by a fire Friday afternoon.
The Wading River Fire Dept. and Riverhead Police Dept. responded to the call just after 3:30 p.m.
There were no reported injuries at this time and the fire is under investigation.
Numerous surrounding fire dept.'s and ambulance companies responded to assist Wading River.

5/19/2020 Car Hits Two Houses In Brookhaven

Car strikes two houses in Brookhaven, Tuesday May 19, 2020.
At approx. 6:10 p.m. authorities were notified of a car that crashed into two houses on Montauk Highway near Old South Country Road.
The Brookhaven Fire Dept., South Country Ambulance, and SCPD 5th Pct. units responded.
The driver of a westbound vehicle lost control and as a result struck two houses, strewing papers and debris across two lawns and, damaging the two structures and foundations of both buildings. Brookhaven firefighters were kind enough to clean up the debris before leaving the scene
The driver of the car suffered undisclosed injuries.
The fire marshals office and buildings dept. were requested to the scene.
Two occupants were at home in the red house at the time but were not injured.
The other house is a dentist's office, and was unoccupied at the time. Bith houses are owned by the same person.

Car strikes utility pole in Center Moriches, Monday May 18, 2020.
Just prior to 11:00 a.m. authorities were notified of a car that crashed into a pole on Railroad Avenue between Sunrise Highway South Service Road and Wading River Road, closing the road in both directions.
The crash caused the utility pole to snap at its base causing the wires to droop lower over Railroad Ave.
The driver of a cement mixer truck struck the lowered wires, entangling his vehicle, trapping him inside.
The Center Moriches Fire Dept. responded and was able to determine the wires were in fact live and requested PSE&G to respond.
SCPD 7th Pct. had the road closed in both directions and power was out to the surrounding neighborhood.
PSE&G workers were able to disconnect the power allowing the truck driver to remove his vehicle.
No injuries were reported to either driver.

Protestors gather in Shirley, Saturday May 16, 2020.
Anti-quarantine, anti-Cuomo, "Open NY Now" protestors gathered in a grassy area on the northeast corner of Montauk Highway and William Floyd Parkway to protest against the COVID-19 shutdown. The protest was slated to begin at 1 p.m. with the possibility of a gathering of anti-protestors. SCPD 7th Pct. officers had all four corners of the intersection cordoned off with metal barriers.

Brush fire in ridge, Tuesday May 12, 2020.
Just after 3:30 p.m. authorities were notified of a possible brush fire in the Brookhaven State Park located off the William Floyd Parkway and Whiskey Road.
The Ridge Fire Dept. and SCPD 7th Pct., and SCPD aviation responded.
Ridge F.D. Chief Louis Kaiser was in charge of the scene and Ridge F.D. Chief Wesley Phillips over saw operations from the SCPD Aviation helicopter circling overhead.
The fire consumed an estimated 18 plus acres and required the response of at least ten additional fire department and ambulance companies.
The fire took approx. two hours to be placed until control with an estimated two more hours for mop up of hot spots.
The NY State DEC, NY State Forest Rangers, Suffolk County officials, NY State Park Police, NY State Park Police Emergency Management, NY State Troopers, and Homeland Security responded as well.
The fire is deemed suspicious and is under investigation.

Car crash in Yaphank on Tuesday May 12, 2020.
A Chevy and a Honda collided at the intersection of Yaphank Middle Island Road and East Bartlett Road just before 6:00 p.m Tuesday afternoon. The force of the crash caused the Honda to leave the road and partially crash into some woods.
The Yaphank Fire Dept. and SCPD 7th Pct. and 6th Pct. units responded.
Reportedly there were four occupants who left the Honda and allegedly fled the scene. At least two of those who allegedly fled were captured a short time later towards the rear of Longwood High School by SCPD K-9 units with the assistance of SCPD Aviation as well.
It was reported that allegedly heroin was found in the Honda which was also an alleged stolen car.
Crime scene responded as well to process the vehicle before it was impounded.
