The new release wall was always picked clean, somebody had already rented the one movie everyone wanted, and your family had to negotiate like world peace depended on choosing between action, comedy, or the weird movie Dad kept insisting “looked good.”

Before it was normal for every kid to have a screen in their hand, boredom had a job to do. ☀️😂

We didn’t have apps, tablets, streaming, or a phone telling us what to watch next. We had chalk, bikes, sticks, rubber balls, busted sidewalks, and whatever half-baked game the neighborhood kids invented in five minutes. Somehow, that was enough to fill an entire day.

And nobody’s parents were organizing every second of it either. You went outside, figured it out, got dirty, got yelled at, drank from the hose, and came home when the streetlights came on. Today, cars remind you to buckle up before you even leave the driveway. Long division wasn’t just schoolwork. It was a crime scene. You had numbers stacked everywhere, eraser marks all over the page, and at least one hole rubbed straight through the paper because that cheap pink eraser gave up before you did.

And then came the worst sentence in school history: “Show your work.” That meant even if you somehow guessed the right answer, you still had to prove how you got there like you were testifying before Congress.

Before it was normal to organize everything in cute little labeled bins, every house had the drawer. 🔑🔋😂

You know the one. Batteries that may or may not work. Bread ties from 1983. Rubber bands that snapped on contact. Random screws. A lighter with no fluid. Keys to vehicles, locks, sheds, or possibly buried treasure — nobody knew, but throwing them away felt illegal.
