Veiled Country: Scoring Goals for Jesus

"Our family is involved in an urban center of influence that focuses on soccer training for kids between the ages of 5 and 15. This soccer academy gives the children a place where they can learn soccer in a friendly way, where the focus is not only on learning the skills but also on their whole development."

Are There Still Mission Challenges?

When the good news about Jesus spread from Jerusalem some 2,000 years ago, it didn’t happen because the apostles came together, planned together, prayed together, and said, “I will go.”

No! Sadly, it happened as a side-effect, a by-product of persecution. When believers fled Jerusalem for safety, they shared the good news in the places where they landed.

Pastor Matthew Herel is leading an initiative that uses service and volunteering as an evangelistic strategy. Active Christians Transforming Society (ACTS) was formed to be a means of serving and being present in the community.

Pastor Herel says, "We're not only saying, 'How can we serve you?' but also 'Come and serve with us as we serve others.'"

What do ice cream and balloons have to do with church planting? Following Christ’s method of ministry, Global Mission pioneer Assoumane and his family mingled with their neighbors by sharing ice cream with them during holidays and buying balloons for the neighborhood children. And because many houses in the neighborhood don’t have running water, Assoumane met their needs by inviting them to draw water from his house.

The clock said 2:30 AM. Sarah found it hard to go back to sleep. She paced her room, listened to a sermon, and read some Bible passages. After being awake for two hours, she finally prayed, “Lord, what do you need me to do?”

She felt impressed to share a Bible verse with Fatma, a girl she’d been giving Spanish lessons to, and who had become a close friend. Fatma had become very discouraged after taking a difficult Spanish exam and had withdrawn from her friends. Sarah
grabbed her phone.and messaged Fatma.

A Tentmaker’s Life

"Most people around me live for money, but I decided to live for God!” Asim (name has been changed), the goalie of his city’s soccer team in a closed country of the Middle East and North Africa Union, testifies that he plays to honor God. It’s affected his income, though. When he joined the team, he was the only Adventist in the entire region, and his request to have Sabbaths off was considered unreasonable. The managers flatly turned down his request.

Veiled City: An Exciting Adventure

Dr. Jose Dial and his wife spent some 40 years as missionaries in various nations, including a veiled country which we can’t mention without possibly jeopardizing the work there. When asked what it was like to serve in a sensitive country, he responded, “Exciting . . . part of an adventure.” He added that it was challenging at times, but that the joy he received from interacting with the people and learning about their culture was fulfilling.

Veiled City: It Came in a Dream

One night I dreamed that an old woman approached me with money in her hands and asked me to pray for her.

The following day, I saw an old woman taking out her trash. She appeared to be sad. I felt impressed to talk to her, so I walked over. I learned that she was worried about her granddaughter who was scheduled to have surgery to remove a tumor on her spine. I offered to pray with her and invited her to come to our home that evening for a prayer meeting.

Canada: I Am the Way

"Jean 14:6” were the eight characters stitched on the sleeve of a volunteer distributing food outside a center of influence in Quebec City, Canada. They were enough to pique the interest of a man living in that largely secular city. The volunteer explained that the characters referred to a Bible text in which Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” The conversation that followed led to the beginning of Bible studies.

Reaching out to a security guard in the Middle East

I wish you could meet Hussein, the security guard for the building where my wife and I live as tentmaker missionaries in the Middle East. From the time we first met him, we could tell he observed his faith carefully and lived with sincerity. I liked him.

One day, Hussein was upset. He impatiently explained that his bicycle, his only transportation to work, had been stolen. He was preoccupied with trying to find a bicycle to borrow. That day, I began praying for a bicycle for my friend.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Safe from the Flames

The whole family was in the rental house when the stove exploded. The flames spread quickly, but they got out safely, and the firefighters managed to put out the fire. Unfortunately, now the family not only had nowhere to live, but they also had to pay for the damage.

When Lidija heard what happened, she decided to show them Christianity in action and help out however possible.

The Philippines: What a Miracle!

Fema looked around quickly when she heard the screams. A man was running toward her carrying a small boy, who was crying out in pain. She saw a bloody wound stretching from chest to belly. Urgently, the man told her that his son had fallen off their house, landing on a fence post.

Fortunately, Fema and her husband, Jiffrey, had their first-aid kit, and they set about helping the child. They started with prayer and then cleaned the wound, rubbing it with fresh garlic to help prevent infection.

Sharing Jesus in Colombia

Oscar’s first 20 years as an Adventist were spent in one church. He loved his church family, but he realized that he was too comfortable, and God was calling him to do more to reach others.

God led him in a surprising way. Oscar started to have trouble with his heart. When he went to the doctor, he found out that he’d likely have to take medication for the rest of his life. This worried Oscar, and he asked the doctor what changes he could make to avoid that. The answer? Lots and lots of exercise.

“So my prayer to God at that time was that He would give me a place where I could serve Him and I could live in a way that I wouldn’t need medicine,” Oscar says. God answered his prayer.

BENDING ON MY KNEES

When I am feeling down and I have not a single friend around.

When I search for a solution but there is not one to be found.

When I find myself alone without anyone to comfort me.

This is the time when I find myself bending on my knees.

When I feel totally hopeless and don’t want to live any more.

When I look at others who have everything while I remain poor.

When I feel like my final hope is gone.

When I ask myself, to deserve this, what did I do wrong?

Why have I been chosen to endure so much pain?

When I feel like I am going totally insane.

Whenever something goes wrong, I’m the scapegoat that they blame.

I feel just so worthless and so totally ashamed.

When I feel that there isn’t a soul in the world who cares for me.

That is when I find myself bending on my knees.

I don’t know where the money will come from to pay the rent.

Yet I know something will get here if only Heaven sent.

I don’t know how I am going to pay the electric and all the other bills.

But you can always find the way if you have the will.

Remember in order for one to get up they must first be down.

If God can keep the world spinning, I know God can turn my life around.

All that God asked of me is to hold on and not to give up.

Like Job weather out those storms that are rough.
Cause we know sooner or later there will be calm seas.

Until then I am going to keep bending on my knees.
