It was a wonderful night for baptisms out at Tall Oaks! We baptized three young women who decided at camp that they wanted to be baptized in this holy place. Pastor Laura and Pastor Lara were there to do the baptisms, and several Smithville folks came out to show their support. Johnny Viebrock said a prayer for Chloe before her baptism. It was such a holy and joyous evening!

Some of you were aware that Stacey Sapp is on vacation with her kids in Oahu, and you were concerned about them when you heard that there was a tsunami warning there. Thanks for the prayers for safety for them and everyone else who might have been affected. Stacey reported on Facebook that they were evacuated, but allowed to return to their lodging once it was deemed safe.

Sign up online or at church to join Women Together as we travel to "The Jo" (Johnson County) on Aug. 9 to visit the Fair Trade store where Pastor Laura has volunteered for over 12 years. We'll have some time for shopping in Downtown Overland Park, then get lunch together and head to Leawood for a tour of the sanctuary at Church of the Resurrection. If you are only available for half a day, you're still welcome to join us!

Here's Pastor Laura's report from the final day of General Assembly:
I attended a great workshop this morning about a traditional church in Tyler, Texas who started a new ministry to reach out to unchurched people. I'll post a link in the comments if you want to check it out. I answered emails and texts in the afternoon, and then we closed out the Assembly with our last worship service. The music was great, as always. Our General Minister and President, Rev. Dr. Terri Hord Owens, taught us about the sankofa bird. It's based on a word from Ghana that signifies the importance of learning from the past (looking back) to build a better future (feet facing forward). We closed with communion, of course!

The General Assembly is a great reminder that we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves. God is at work in all of our churches, in many different ways. But we are all Disciples of Christ!

Pastor Laura's report from Day 3 of General Assembly: today was all about learning. I attended two workshops this morning. The first was about how to find and tell the history/story of your church. I thought that would be helpful as we prepare for a celebration in 2027. The second was about revitalizing your congregation. Lots of great ideas in both sessions.

This afternoon, Clif and I toured the National Civil Rights Museum. I have been there twice before, but it's always worth another trip. You might remember that Dr. King was killed here in Memphis, and the place where he died - the Lorraine Motel - is now a moving and powerful museum about the struggle for freedom and equality. It's a lot to take in, and I was overcome with strong emotions of sadness and anger and grief and disgust at the way God's beloved children had been treated. The museum tour ends at the hotel room where Dr. King was staying when he died. A Black woman near me was overcome with emotion and began crying loudly and calling out to God to help us. Others near her began to hold her and comfort her. Her response felt completely natural after all we had seen in the museum. I'm going to hold all of this experience and pray through my own response to what I saw.
