Pope Leo accepts resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulette

Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Michael Joseph Boulette, who is 75, the age at which canon law requires bishops to submit their resignation to the pope. Most Rev. Boulette did so on June 4.
In his retirement letter to the Holy Father Bishop Boulette wrote, “It has been a profound privilege to have officially served the Church since the age of 14, when I entered high school seminary. God’s abundant grace has been poured out without measure. Serving Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller as a pastor and then auxiliary bishop has been a tremendous honor.”
He concluded, “My preeminent vocation as teacher and preacher is still very much alive, and I will continue to do these as ministry requires.”
Bishop Boulette will continue his duties as vicar general and moderator of the curia in meeting the pastoral and administrative needs of the archdiocese until September 30.
At that time Bishop Boulette will return to ministry at St. Peter upon the Water: A Center for Spiritual Direction and Formation which he founded in 2004.
Archbishop Gustavo described Most Rev. Boulette as a compassionate bishop and a loving shepherd to the priests and the people of the archdiocese.
“Bishop Boulette has a spirituality of joy and simplicity. He is a man with a marvelous pastoral heart for the needs of people and for the Church. He possesses a wide breadth of pastoral experience as a priest of the archdiocese; and we were blessed through his ministry in seminary formation and deep involvement in spiritual direction,” said the archbishop. “I’m sure Father Mike never would have imagined that he would be a bishop; never would he have imagined that he would spend years of ministry in the episcopate. But his varied priestly experiences prepared him for this.”
Pope Francis named then-Msgr. Boulette as auxiliary bishop of San Antonio on Jan. 23, 2017. His Mass of episcopal ordination took place on March 20 of that year – the feast of St. Joseph -- at St. Mark the Evangelist Church in San Antonio.
Bishop Boulette was born on June 4, 1950, in Hudson Falls, N.Y. His family moved to Fredericksburg when he was nine years old, and he attended St. Mary’s School there. He graduated from St. John Seminary High School in San Antonio in 1968.
While at Assumption Seminary, he received a bachelor’s degree in psychology (summa cm laude) from St. Mary’s University in 1971, and a master’s degree in psychology from Trinity University in 1972. In 1973 he traveled to Moreau Seminary at the University of Notre Dame, studying with the Holy Cross Fathers, and he graduated with a master’s degree in theology (the equivalent at that time to a master of divinity degree) in 1975. He was ordained to the priesthood on March 19, 1976, also the feast of St. Joseph.
Bishop Boulette served as a parochial vicar at St. James Church in Gonzales from 1976 to 1980, followed by service as parochial vicar at St. Ann Church in San Antonio from 1980 to 1983.
He ministered as director of Spiritual Formation and Liturgy at Assumption Seminary from 1983 to 1992. During this time, he was appointed coordinator of Hospitality for the papal visit of Pope John Paul II to San Antonio in 1987.
During his sabbatical in 1993 he earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Preaching and Worship from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin.
Upon his return from sabbatical, Bishop Boulette was appointed pastor of Notre Dame Church in Kerrville from 1993 to 2004. He is the founding director of St. Peter upon the Water: A Center for Spiritual Direction and Formation in Ingram and he still serves in that position. The Center is a place where people may find spiritual direction and a formation program for spiritual directors. The Center also provides speakers for parish retreats and missions.
On March 10, 2005, Bishop Boulette was appointed chaplain to His Holiness Pope John Paul II with the title of monsignor. He returned to Notre Dame Parish in Kerrville in 2010 as administrator pro tem and also served in that capacity until his episcopal appointment.
Bishop Boulette served as dean of the Fredericksburg Deanery and a trustee of St. Peter upon the Water: A Center for Spiritual Direction and Formation. He also served the archdiocese as a member of the Priests’ Personnel Board, the Presbyteral Council, and the College of Consultors.
In addition, Bishop Boulette is well-known throughout the archdiocese and the state as a retreat presenter and parish mission speaker. He was instrumental in developing guidelines, policies and procedures for the archdiocese during the coronavirus pandemic.
He has also served as chaplain to Catholic Life Insurance and the Knights of St. Gregory and a member of the Boards of Assumption Seminary and Mexican American Catholic College.
The Archdiocese of San Antonio comprises the counties of Val Verde, Edwards, Kinney, Real, Uvalde, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera, Medina, Frio, Kendall, Bexar, Atascosa, McMullen, Comal, Guadalupe, Wilson, Gonzales, and Karnes.

El Papa León XIV acepta la renuncia del Obispo Auxiliar Michael Boulette
El Papa León XIV ha aceptado la dimisión del Obispo Auxiliar Michael Joseph Boulette, quien tiene 75 años, la edad a la que el derecho canónico exige que los obispos presenten su renuncia al Papa. Su Excelencia, Monseñor Boulette lo hizo el 4 de junio.
En su carta de renuncia al Santo Padre, el Obispo Boulette escribió: “Ha sido un profundo privilegio haber servido oficialmente a la Iglesia desde los 14 años, cuando ingresé al seminario menor. La abundante gracia de Dios se ha derramado sin medida. Servir al Arzobispo Gustavo García-Siller como párroco y luego como Obispo Auxiliar ha sido un gran honor”.
Concluyó: “Mi vocación preeminente como maestro y predicador sigue muy vigente y continuaré ejerciendo estas funciones según lo requiera el ministerio”.
El Obispo Boulette continuará con sus funciones como Vicario General y Moderador de la Curia, atendiendo las necesidades pastorales y administrativas de la Arquidiócesis hasta el 30 de septiembre.
En esa fecha, el Obispo Boulette regresará a su ministerio en St. Peter upon the Water, centro de dirección espiritual y formación, que él mismo fundó en 2004.

Pero sus diversas experiencias sacerdotales lo prepararon para esto”.
El Papa Francisco nombró Obispo Auxiliar de San Antonio al entonces Monseñor Boulette el 23 de enero de 2017. Su misa de ordenación episcopal tuvo lugar el 20 de marzo de ese año, fiesta de San José, en la Iglesia de San Marcos Evangelista de San Antonio.
